New Opel Grandland Gives A Preview Of Next-Gen Jeep® Compass

New STLA Medium SUV, Shows Us A Hint Of What To Expect In Size For 2026 Compass...

Opel has raised the bar yet again with the introduction of the all-new 2024 Opel Grandland. This latest addition to the Opel lineup signifies a significant departure from its predecessor, boasting a plethora of luxurious features and cutting-edge technology that elevate it to a class of its own.

Architecture and Powertrain –

At the heart of the new Grandland lies the groundbreaking STLA Medium platform, a versatile architecture shared with the Peugeot 3008 that enables seamless integration of various powertrain options. For the environmentally conscious driver, Opel offers an all-electric variant equipped with either a 73 kWh or a 98 kWh battery pack, delivering an impressive range of up to 700 km (435 miles). Fast-charging capabilities of up to 160 kW ensure minimal downtime, making long journeys effortless and convenient.

For those who prefer a more traditional approach, Opel also offers a combustion-powered version of the Grandland. This variant features a fuel-efficient 1.2-liter PureTech three-cylinder engine coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, perfectly balancing performance and efficiency. Additionally, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant is in the pipeline, offering approximately 50 miles of pure-electric range, catering to diverse driving preferences.

Features and Technology –

The new Grandland is a marvel of engineering and a haven of luxury and convenience. Adorned with Opel’s signature Vizor-style front and illuminated logo, along with Intelli-Lux Pixel Matrix HD lighting, the Grandland commands attention on the road. Its sleek two-tone floating roof and sharp wheel-arch feature lines further accentuate its dynamic profile, exuding sophistication and style.

Step inside, and you’re greeted by a cabin replete with premium features and state-of-the-art technology. An expansive 16-inch infotainment screen takes center stage, seamlessly integrating with the vehicle’s intuitive interface. A heads-up display provides essential information within the driver’s line of sight, ensuring maximum safety and convenience.

But perhaps the pièce de résistance lies in the Grandland’s seats. Equipped with powered side bolsters, ventilation, and even a massaging function, these seats redefine comfort on the road. A specially designed slot on the front seats alleviates pressure on the tailbone, ensuring a genuinely ergonomic driving experience.

The unveiling of the Opel Grandland marks a milestone for Opel and provides a tantalizing glimpse into the future of compact SUVs. Built on the same STLA Medium platform, the Grandland shares its foundation with the upcoming 2026 Jeep® Compass, signaling a new era of collaboration and innovation within the automotive industry.

Drawing inspiration from Peugeot’s innovative design and electrification efforts, the next-generation Compass is poised to offer similar spaciousness, efficiency, and advanced technology. Production of the Compass will take place at the Brampton Assembly Plant, following a significant investment of $1.32 billion CDN to retool and update its facilities.

Rumors surrounding the next-generation Compass suggest that it will offer both internal combustion engine (ICE) and battery-electric (BEV) powertrain options, catering to a wide range of consumer preferences and driving needs.

Size –

While the new Grandland impresses with its increased dimensions, its worth noting how it compares to the current generation Compass. The new Grandland measures 183.1 inches in length, 75 inches in width, and 65.4 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 109.6 inches. In contrast, the current Compass boasts slightly smaller dimensions imensions, with a length of approximately 174 inches, a width of around 71.7 inches, a height of about 65 inches (depending on the trim level), and a wheelbase of 103.9 inches. While both vehicles offer ample space and versatility, the Grandland’s larger dimensions hint at its potential for enhanced interior roominess that will hopefully make it to the next-generation Compass.

This Opel Grandland has good proportions as far as length, width and cabin space. I'm only voicing my personal preferences on this. I am hoping to see a Jeep model with strait-edge styling like the 1984-90 Jeep Cherokee and the Patriot. The recently discontinued Renegade also used that style on a smaller vehicle. Also, the Recon is on the way. If the next Compass grows to the size of the Grandland, then it will crowd out the Cherokee against the Grand Cherokee.

I'd rather have them certify the Chinese Jeep rather than an European Opel or Peugeot.

I believe the thrust of the article is towards this being a global platform. This Grandland has a dash which is easy to hate. Many people have voiced their objections to hierarchical menus menus with laminate touchscreens. A spokesperson for Hyundai-KIA publicly apologized for this at the NY auto show saying they will bring back more buttons for the HVAC and radio.

I'm pretty sure the next Compass power train will be built here because Dundee is being retooled. Stellantis has been in the habit of introducing the fully electric version of a new model first, and then whatever ICE option is added later. When the Vauxhall version of the Grandland was reviewed by Electrified on YouTube, they did mention the ICE option was a PHEV, but didn't go into details as far as engine, motor, and transmission.

One of the two Chinese Leapmotor models to be sold in Europe is close in size to the Grandland and will post a higher price than the Compass. I'll pass on that.

I am still puzzled why Stellantis management thinks we in North America prefer European designs over those designs coming from Latin America. The Jeep Commander and Ram Rampage seem to resonate with many of us on this forum.
