Leapmotor Set To Reveal REEV C10 Crossover For Europe

Tavares' Chinese EV Brand Shifts to REEV as Consumers Move from EVs to Hybrids...

Leapmotor, the Chinese startup under Stellantis’ joint venture, is rumored to unveil a range-extender electric vehicle (REEV) version of its flagship C10 crossover at the upcoming Brussel Motor Show in January. This move comes amid growing consumer concerns over the high cost of electric vehicles (EVs) and the shift toward more affordable hybrid options. While former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares was a major advocate for the all-electric model lineup, introducing the C10 REEV seems to respond to the current demand for more flexible and cost-effective alternatives.

With EV sales in Europe experiencing a decline, many consumers are turning toward hybrid technology for its lower cost and longer range. The C10 REEV, however, stands out by offering a combined driving range of more than 950 km (590 miles), which beats many of Stellantis’ own EVs. This impressive range is thanks to a 158 kW (215 horsepower) electric motor paired with a 1.5-liter internal combustion engine (ICE). The C10 REEV features a 28.4 kWh battery, providing an electric range of 145 km (90 miles) on the WLTP cycle.

The C10 REEV is designed to operate primarily as an electric vehicle. The electric motor drives the wheels, providing a quiet and responsive driving experience. Once the battery is low, the internal combustion engine kicks in to recharge it, extending the vehicle’s range. This gives drivers the flexibility of a traditional gasoline engine while maintaining the benefits of an electric motor for shorter trips.

In addition to its impressive range, the C10 REEV boasts a fuel consumption of just 0.4 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of only 10 g/km, making it a more environmentally friendly choice compared to traditional gasoline vehicles. Drivers can choose between several “Energy Modes” via the vehicle’s digital screen, allowing them to optimize the vehicle’s performance based on their needs.

The C10 REEV supports both AC and DC fast charging. With DC fast charging, the vehicle can recover half of its electric range in just 18 minutes, making it convenient for long-distance trips.

A particularly noteworthy aspect of Leapmotor’s C10 REEV launch is its direct competition with Stellantis’ core models, as it will be sold alongside Stellantis’ own lineups in the same dealerships. This strategic move to introduce a Chinese-brand vehicle that competes against Stellantis’ existing offerings has caused some controversy.

Leapmotor’s C10 REEV is a significant step in the company’s expansion of its European presence. With its innovative hybrid technology, competitive pricing, and flexible driving range, the C10 REEV offers a practical and attractive option for European customers looking for the benefits of electric driving without the limitations of range anxiety.

As we look to the future, REEV and hybrid technology are likely to play an increasing role under Stellantis’ new leadership. Ram, for example, is pushing forward with its own REEV version of the Ram 1500, called the Ramcharger, set to launch in early 2025. Incorporating electrified powertrains with onboard power generation could provide the best of both worlds for customers seeking more flexibility without compromising range or charging capabilities.

IF they can get a Fiat powerplant in that, it would make it a lot better.

Not thrilled at this illicit relationship with China. Sometimes there are things more important than money. Hope my man Trump will ban vehicles like this and those built by China under the radar in places like Mexico. Many Americans do not realize the deep and fundamental differences between our economic systems and the status of workers in various authoritarian nations that translate into dirt cheap labor and horrible working conditions.
Stellantis might have been better off without these vehicles that basically violate the tenants of free markets, the bedrock of Capitalism.

Just love how Tavares complained about Chinese competition, yet he pushed a Chinese brand into his dealers to undercut their legacy vehicles.

Love em or hate em, the fact remains that these Chinese designed and built battery electrics and extended range models work well and seemed sorted out. How about that Charger EV, is it ready for prime time? Or the Ram REV? Hopefully the Ramcharger will arrive fully polished and ready for duty.

Chrysler bought into Mitsubishi in the 1970's, selling some of the Japanese products and using other technology in domestic built vehicles. Daimler finally destroyed that relationship. I suspect Leap has some technical know-how which Stellantis could use.
