Every year, Jeep fans and off-road junkies flock to Moab, Utah, for the Easter Jeep® Safari (EJS)—and for the 59th annual event, Jeep is cranking things up a notch. Among the seven new concept rigs rolling out this weekend, the Jeep® Wrangler 4xe Bug Out Concept stands out as the most stripped-down, backcountry-ready machine of the bunch.

Built off a Jeep Wrangler 4xe four-door platform, the Bug Out reimagines what ultralight overlanding can look like. Jeep’s engineers took the rear doors out of the equation completely and filled them in, giving the rig a two-door, long-box silhouette with seating for just two. It’s a clean, purposeful layout focused entirely on function. And in true Jeep fashion, it’s ready to hit the trail.
The back end ditches the Wrangler’s traditional side-hinged tailgate for a drop-down setup like you’d find on a Gladiator, making it easier to load up gear or chill under the stars. The sides are cut low—flush with Mopar front half-doors—keeping things light and giving you quick access to the cabin. Jeep even raised the carbon-fiber roof by four inches to make reaching in from outside a breeze.

This concept is loaded with clever touches: a flat rear floor with built-in tie-downs for a sleeping hammock, high-clearance fender flares, and big 37-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 tires on 18-inch wheels for serious trail grip. There’s a steel front bumper, bright LED lighting, and a custom hood up front, while the rear gets a high-departure-angle tube bumper to avoid trail damage.
One of the coolest features? A set of bright yellow battery packs mounted behind the doors. Jeep hasn’t confirmed whether they juice up the Wrangler 4xe’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain or serve as backup for an electric off-road scooter that comes along for the ride. Either way, it’s a clear nod to the brand’s electrified future.

While the Bug Out likely won’t make it to production, it’s clearly a playground for new ideas. That taller roofline, in particular, could be a subtle hint at what’s coming in the next-gen Wrangler. Until then, this concept is all about showing what Jeep can do when it dials everything back to the basics—and builds it tough.
