Jeep® Recalls Over 79,000 SUVs For Rear Backup Camera Issues

Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) has recalled approximately 79,365 units of its 2024 Jeep® Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L vehicles.

Some of the above vehicles may have been built with an incorrectly programmed Rearview Camera Module (RVCM). The vehicle operator will notice that the rearview image is not displayed if attempting to reference the image while backing. If this warning is not heeded, backing without verifying it is safe could increase the risk of injury to people outside the vehicle.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, “Rear Visibility.”

Regarding the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer (WS) models, the suspect period began on May 23, 2023, when the first suspect vehicle was produced, and ended on August 14, 2024, when the last suspect vehicle was produced. The suspect population was determined using vehicle production records.

Similar vehicles not included in this recall were built after the suspect build period or do not have an RVCM.

The total number of affected vehicles for the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer is 20,550.

For the two-row Grand Cherokee (WL74) models, the suspect period began on July 12, 2023, when the first suspect vehicle was produced, and ended on September 9, 2024, when the last suspect vehicle was produced. The suspect population was determined using vehicle production records.

The total number of affected vehicles for the Grand Cherokee is 34,485.

As for the three-row Grand Cherokee L (WL75) models, the suspect period began on August 22, 2023, when the first suspect vehicle was produced, and ended on September 9, 2024, when the last suspect vehicle was produced. The suspect population was determined using vehicle production records.

Similar vehicles not included in this recall were built after the suspect build period or do not have an RVCM.

The total number of affected vehicles for the Grand Cherokee L is 24,330.

Recall Choronology – 

  • On July 1, 2024, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization was notified by the FCA US Engineering organization of a potential issue related to rearview cameras not displaying on some 2024 MY Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2024 MY Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and 2024 MY Jeep Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer vehicles.
  • From July 2024, through October 2024, FCA US TSRC reviewed warranty data, field records, and customer assistance records to understand potential customer consequence.
  • From October 2024, through November 2024, FCA US TSRC met with FCA US Engineering to understand all potential failure modes of the issue and regulation requirements.
  • On November 27, 2024, FCA US TSRC organization recognized a RVCM programming issue existed on certain vehicles related to the rearview back up camera not displaying the rearview image, potentially resulting in a noncompliance with FMVSS No.111.
  • On December 13, 2024, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.

Dealers will update the rearview camera module software free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on January 21, 2025. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA’s number for this recall is D5B.
