IONNA Goes Nationwide: EV Charging Revolution Begins

Automaker-Backed Charging Network Expands Across the U.S.

The electric vehicle (EV) charging landscape in America is taking a major leap forward as IONNA, the joint venture formed by eight of the world’s leading automakers, moves from beta testing to full-scale national expansion. Backed by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota, IONNA is on a mission to redefine the EV charging experience with reliability, speed, and convenience at the core.

A New Era for EV Charging –

The grand opening of IONNA’s first full-scale charging station, known as a “Rechargery,” in Apex, North Carolina, marks the beginning of a national rollout. The company also inaugurated its headquarters and customer experience lab in Durham, North Carolina, setting the stage for ongoing innovation.

With a goal of deploying over 30,000 ultra-fast chargers by 2030, IONNA aims to ensure that EV drivers always have access to high-speed, reliable charging stations—whether they’re commuting in the city or embarking on a cross-country road trip.

Stress-Tested and Ready to Roll –

Before launching nationwide, IONNA put its system through a rigorous testing phase in late 2024. Automaker fleets and everyday EV drivers participated in over 4,400 charging sessions across 80 different vehicle models, consuming nearly 63,000 kWh of energy. This extensive testing allowed IONNA to refine its hardware, software, and user experience, ensuring a seamless transition into full-scale deployment.

Rapid Expansion Across the Country –

IONNA’s nationwide rollout is already well underway, with over 100 contracted locations secured. New Rechargeries are now open in Houston, Texas, and Abilene, Kansas, while Willcox, Arizona, and six more locations are under construction. In 2025, IONNA plans to bring more than 1,000 additional charging bays online, significantly increasing fast-charging accessibility across the U.S.

More Than Just Charging: A Full-Service Experience –

IONNA is committed to revolutionizing the charging experience beyond just plugging in. In partnership with Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology, IONNA will introduce AI-powered, checkout-free retail spaces at its charging stations. The first of these advanced retail hubs will open in Garner, North Carolina, offering grab-and-go snacks and essentials 24/7.

By 2025, IONNA will also expand Plug & Charge capabilities to more automakers, allowing EV drivers to simply plug in and start charging—no apps or credit cards required. Other planned innovations include AI-driven smart reservations, in-car payments, and optimized route planning, making IONNA the most integrated charging network in the country.

Powering the Future of American Roads –

Beyond charging infrastructure, IONNA’s growth represents a major investment in American jobs and manufacturing. Each of the 30,000 planned charging bays will contribute to new jobs, cutting-edge technology, and the expansion of EV accessibility nationwide.

By bringing together the expertise of eight global automakers, IONNA is setting a new standard for EV charging—one that prioritizes speed, reliability, and convenience. As the network continues to expand, EV drivers across the U.S. will benefit from a smarter, faster, and more seamless charging experience.
