Hornet GLH Package Is Coming, But Only for GT Trim

GLH Package Returns with More Power and Performance

Last week, we discussed how Dodge CEO Matt McAlear confirmed that the GLH package would finally be coming later this year. This comes as the vehicle was first teased in August 2022 at the Dodge Speed Weeks event at M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan. However, the biggest news we’ve learned this week is that the package will supposedly be based only on the GT trim, leaving those who chose the high-performance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) R/T model out of luck—at least for now.

What to Expect from the Hornet GT GLH –

The GLH (Goes Like Hell) package will give the Hornet GT a more aggressive look, improved handling, and possibly a performance boost. Based on the Dodge Omni, the original GLH models from the 1980s were known for their lightweight design and turbocharged power. Dodge’s 2022 Hornet GLH Concept previewed the potential upgrades, featuring a lowered suspension, lightweight wheels, sportier styling, and tuning enhancements.

Why Only the GT? –

The Hornet GT is already a strong performer in its segment. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter Hurricane4 I4 engine, producing 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, allowing the Hornet GT to achieve a 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) time of approximately 6.5 seconds. The GLH package could bring further improvements, possibly reducing acceleration times and refining handling dynamics.

Dodge seems to be positioning the GLH package as a gas-powered enthusiast option, distinct from the electrified R/T PHEV model. While this may disappoint R/T buyers who were teased with the R/T GLH Concept in 2023, it shows Dodge’s commitment to ICE (internal combustion engine) performance in a segment increasingly moving toward hybrids and EVs.

As we wait for official performance specs and pricing, one thing is certain—the Dodge Hornet GT GLH is shaping up to be a serious player in the compact performance SUV market.

The idea of the Hornet isn't bad being that it's the more performance-oriented option between vehicles like the Escape, the Trax and the Trailblazer. Truth is, while it's not as raw as it's predecessors, the Hornet is definitely in position to fill the niche of the SRT4 Caliber as it truly is the Sport Compact of the Compact Sport Utility Vehicle world. I do agree with Triple-T that a 2.0L Hurricane-4 should be the powertrain for the GLH and that 2.0L Hurricane-4 should be the 300+hp EVO version and mated to an 80hp rear EDM. Just saying.
