On October 4, 2024, the Stellantis Warren Truck Assembly Plant (WTAP) achieved a historic milestone by producing its final 2024 Ram 1500 Classic (DS) half-ton pickup truck. The last vehicle off the assembly line was a Tradesman model, finished in striking Delmonico Red and powered by the robust 5.7-liter (345 cubic-inch) HEMI® V8 engine.
The Legacy of the Fourth-Generation Ram 1500 (DS) –
The Ram 1500 has been a cornerstone of the full-size pickup truck market, celebrated for its capability, comfort, and innovation. The fourth generation or DS, debuted in 2008 and was launched as the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500. This model represented a significant evolution in the Ram lineup, appealing to work and leisure customers.
Notable for its distinct styling and improved aerodynamics, the fourth-generation Ram 1500 was available in several configurations, including Regular Cab, Quad Cab, and Crew Cab, with various bed lengths (5.5′, 6.3′, and 8′). Introducing a coil spring five-link rear suspension replaced traditional leaf springs, enhancing ride comfort and handling.
Engine Options and Features –
The DS model offered an impressive range of engine options, including:
- 4.7-liter MAGNUM V8
- 5.7-liter HEMI® V8
- 3.6-liter Pentastar V6
- 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6
The EcoDiesel engine was particularly notable for delivering impressive torque and fuel efficiency, making it a popular choice among environmentally conscious consumers. The Ram 1500 DS also featured the revolutionary RamBox cargo management system, which provided secure storage within the bed walls.
Awards and Recognition –
Throughout its production, the Ram 1500 DS achieved notable acclaim, winning Motor Trend’s “Truck of the Year” titles in 2013 and 2014. This recognition solidified its reputation as a leader in the full-size pickup market, showcasing its blend of performance, comfort, and advanced features.
Even after the fifth-generation Ram 1500 (DT) was introduced in 2019, the fourth-generation Ram 1500 DS continued to be produced and sold as the Ram 1500 Classic. This designation provided customers with a proven model while retaining its established reputation and features, offering a budget-friendly half-ton option for those seeking a reliable pickup.
Warren Truck Assembly Plant’s Legacy –
Established in 1938, the WTAP has been a cornerstone of automotive production, originally known as “Dodge City.” The plant, alongside the Warren Stamping and Mound Road Engine plants, significantly shaped the automotive manufacturing landscape, producing the Dodge Dakota from 1987 until 2011, with an impressive output of over 2.75 million vehicles.
WTAP has undergone a substantial transformation in recent years, benefiting from a $1 billion investment to modernize its facilities for producing the Jeep® Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer (WS).
Looking to the Future –
As WTAP moves forward, it is poised to embrace electrification, with plans to introduce 4xe models of the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer by late next year. This initiative ensures that the plant remains at the forefront of the automotive industry while adapting to evolving consumer preferences.
A Fond Farewell –
Over the weekend, workers at WTAP shared heartfelt tributes on social media, commemorating the end of an era with the Ram 1500 Classic. Employees posted images of unfinished trucks in various stages of assembly, each adorned with signatures from the assembly line crew. This display highlighted the pride and craftsmanship that have been hallmarks of the facility.
