European Union Targets Carbon Fiber for 2029 Ban

New Proposal Could Force Automakers to Rethink Lightweight Materials

The European Union (EU) might soon label carbon fiber a hazardous material, a move that could ban its use in vehicles starting in 2029. If approved, this would be the first time any major government treats carbon fiber as dangerous, sending shockwaves through the auto industry.

The proposed change comes as part of a revision to the End of Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive, which deals with how old cars are recycled. Lawmakers are worried about tiny strands of carbon fiber—called filaments—that can break off during recycling. These small pieces can become airborne and possibly irritate the skin or harm the environment. That concern is why the EU is looking to put carbon fiber in the same category as lead, mercury, and other known hazardous materials.

Carbon fiber is super strong and super light, which makes it perfect for building cars that need to go fast or far. It’s become especially popular as electric vehicles (EVs) have grown heavier due to their batteries. Automakers use carbon fiber to cut weight and increase range. High-performance cars like the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale and Maserati MC20 rely on carbon fiber to reduce mass and improve both speed and handling.

Right now, the proposal only applies to cars. Other industries like aviation, wind energy, and sports gear—which also rely heavily on carbon fiber—aren’t included yet. Still, the proposed law has automakers and carbon fiber suppliers on high alert. The EU says materials like carbon fiber could still be used if there are “no adequate alternatives,” which opens the door for possible exemptions.

If passed, the law would give companies until 2029 to find replacements or apply for special permissions. That’s not much time in the world of automotive design and materials engineering, and many expect strong opposition from the industry. Europe’s carmakers make up roughly 20% of global carbon fiber consumption, so a ban would hit hard.

The next step is debate. Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the European Council will hash out the details in the coming weeks. In the end, carbon fiber might be banned outright, classified as hazardous but still allowed, or taken off the table altogether.

The original report was published by Nikkei, which also noted that strong pushback is expected from both manufacturers and major automakers who depend on carbon fiber.

Either way, this is one story worth keeping an eye on—especially as the industry pushes toward lighter, more efficient vehicles.

Amazing achievement and a real collectors car on day one. Personally I am looking beyond this Demon to the future Challenger and the Hurricane family of engines that frankly, will be the salvation of Dodge as electric is a pipe dream with a tentative future and these sixes will save the brand not that Banshee. Sorry !
Time NOW, immediately to start talking next generation Challenger/ Charger and Hurricane Power. The Hemi has been sacrificed and fans need to know, beyond rumor, what is happening at Dodge.

Up yours, Elon.

That was an incredible final bow for this long running clunk of badassery. Starting tomorrow, I suppose, what's next for these people will begin to leak out and I'm almost sure most of people won't be too impressed, so made sense for Dodge to blow past the 900 HP rumors as a final goodbye for the beloved boat.

I foresee many v6 cars running rear flares only...

Sweet car. 1FAST29 was apparently a nod to the 29th state (Iowa - producer of the most ethanol) per TFL video with tim.

Ah ha, I was wondering about that 29 plate, thanks!
