Carlos Tavares, Stellantis’ now-former CEO, has officially stepped down, marking a significant leadership change for the global automaker. United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain responded to the news with optimism, calling it “a major step in the right direction.” His statement outlined the challenges Tavares left behind and the expectations for Stellantis’ new leadership moving forward.

It is in the UAWs best interest to support flexibility and cooperation with struggling Stellantis. Victory lap has been taken and the damage remains from the old regime, but if the whole show collapses than everyone loses. Rumors of Belvedere building the Cherokee and if not canceled, the Wagoneer S, are out there. That move should help everyone. Pretty sure Trump will set a reasonable time table for Canadian manufacturing, cut a deal, but that’s a tough one. It does not offer any benefit to rub salt in the wounds when the real issue is opening US factories and getting folks back to work. I’d push for total American autonomy and an American CEO at Aurburn Hills when, yes, that place reopens too. Call it symbolic, but we are talking real operational control, not just lip service. The headquarters with our treasured Pentastar logo out front and center must reopen. Keep the STLA platforms, make most everything else American. The Europeans need not call.
