The 2018 Woodward Dream Cruise Is Officially In The Books:
Week Long Events, Bring The Automotive World Back To The Motor City Suburbs...
Wow, what a week. We started the week off at the 4th annual Roadkill Nights Powered by Dodge event, which featured a closed portion of Woodward Avenue for amateur drag racing. Now we ended it this past Saturday by enjoying the official day of the Woodward Dream Cruise.
In August 1995, Nelson House and a group of volunteers looked to relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America’s first highway. That year, 250,000 people participated—nearly ten times the number expected. The rest, as they say, is history.
Today, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, drawing 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars each year from around the globe—from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the former Soviet Union. North American cruisers from California, Georgia, Canada and all points in between caravan to Metro Detroit to participate in what has become, for many, an annual rite of summer.
Now the Woodward Dream Cruise is spreading into the Woodward Dream Cruise week as cars cruise the section of Woodward Avenue as it passes through six different cities. Cars and people line the street the entire weekend and it makes for such an amazing event during the Detroit summer.
We happened to have our camera in hand as we sat and watched many of the cruisers take to Woodward on Friday night. While the dream cruise is on Saturday, most cars are parked up and down Woodward and traffic is a nightmare to get through. During the week, you get your best chance at seeing cars as they run and up the Woodward Avenue strip.
