Stellantis working on Modular Axial flux Motor for automotive usage.

Stellantis and Nidec PSA Emotors are involved in research institutes with the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (Romainia) the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel as part of the MAXIMA project (Modular AXIal flux Motor for Automotive).
Mercedes has taken over the Oxford UK electric drive system specialist Yasa in 2021 and plans to assemble axial flux motors based on Yasa designs for its upcoming electric sports cars. Current vehicle electric motors are radial electric motors. Axial flux motors have smaller packaging requirements are lighter, have improved torque, power density and reduce manufacturing time and materials. Another big advantage with axial flux motors is the ability to stack motors for greater power requirements allowing for a single motor production as opposed to varying sized radial motors. A small car can use 1 motor while a larger vehicle can have 2 or more of the same motor as required. We all know how F.C.A. likes to use the same motor i.e. Pentastar for many applications. This approach coupled with small ICE battery extender and small batteries seems like the best approach to reaching price parity with current ICE vehicles.
