Richard Petty auction held in Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Nevada- (May 12, 2018) - Julien's Auctions, the world record-breaking auction house, held the motorsports auction event of the season celebrating the most decorated driver in NASCAR history, PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF RICHARD PETTY, today May 12, 2018 at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas in front of a excited audience of collectors and bidders live on the floor, online and on the phone.
Richard Petty's iconic No. 43 dayglo red and Petty Blue 1974 Dodge Charger, considered one of the most historically important cars in NASCAR history, sold for $490,000. The NASCAR Hall of Famer rode the Charger to victory in 31 races, the most wins driven in one car in all of NASCAR history, including his fifth Daytona 500 win. It is the most historic car in Petty's acclaimed 35 year racing history that saw a record number 200 career race wins, over 700 top 10s in 1,184 starts, seven Daytona 500 wins and seven NASCAR Championships.
Another marquee moment of today's auction was the sale of NASCAR star Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr.'s history making Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, which sold for $81,000. The Richard Petty Motorsports driver drove the car in his first Daytona 500 and became the second highest finishing rookie ever in their Daytona 500 debut as well as the highest finishing African-American driver in the 60-year history of the Great American Race.
Other highlights included a 2003 Victory Lap Winston Cup Series racing suit that sold for $2,560 above its estimate of $800-$1,200; a Sparco brand Richard Petty Motorsports racing suit worn by Petty that sold for $3,437 (estimate: $2,000-$3,000); a 1975 Richard Petty NASCAR Winston Cup Award plaque that sold for $1,920 above its estimate of $300-$500; a Richard Petty International Motorsports Hall of Fame ring that sold for $3,840 above its estimate of $1,000-$2,000; a 2017 Petty Garage limited edition Mustang golf cart which sold for $10,625 well over its original estimate of $6,000-$8,000; his No. 43 black cowboy boots that sold for $8,960 well above its estimate: $1,000-$2,000 as well as his iconic black cowboy hat which sold for $2,880 (estimate: $600-$800); his Jeff Hamilton leather jacket with the STP racing team logo that sold for $1,125 (estimate: $600-$800) and more.
