NHTSA Reopens Probe into Dodge Dart Over Gear Shifter Cable Failures

If you own a 2013 to 2016 Dodge Dart with a 6-speed automatic transmission, this one’s for you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially reopened an investigation into a known issue with the Dart’s shifter cable bushings—specifically those that were supposed to be fixed under a 2019 safety recall.

I went my usual off the rails emotional way when the Dart launched, predicting long lines at dealerships and huge sales for Dodge. Everytime I see one of these Darts, infrequently for sure, on the road I think to myself, “man that is a great little car.” Of course FCA immediately found a way to ruin my initial enthusiasm with a flawed launch and a vehicle configuration that, as became a pattern of failure to this day, was driven by “Eurothink” and ignorance, if not defiance, of the American market. Wrong on power train, wrong on size, wrong on cost, and wrong on marketing and I guess, wrong on gear shifter cables. That neat Dart bombed when with a few tweaks, it could have been a major success. This Dart frankly could have been the compact Dodge needed then and sure as hellfire needs today. Hopefully, at long last, we have someone making decisions that will get a line of compacts to Dodge that will be built for Americans by Americans, from its day one launch. Looking at this very attractive Dart I still ponder regrettably, just what might have been for Dodge. Will lessons be learned next time? Venturing again off my emotion driven rails…I hope so…again.
