Protectionism equals survival, period. It’s not Sinophobic to realize that China and the Western democracies have two very different economic systems. China is a Communist State that owns the means of production that has few labor laws and miserably low wages. The West has a Capitalistic Free Enterprise system with private ownership, a profit motive, featuring collective labor bargaining assuring fair wages and generous benefits. It’s the American Dream that has made America great.
That stark difference makes Chinese products overly competitive and Western products implicitly more expensive. Tariffs are the only assurance of a global competitive free market, long term survival of our domestic industries and the continued existence of a vibrant middle class.
It’s economic war and we need to win. Tariffs are necessary.
