CUSW moving to Toluca, Mexico:
“Cherokee: A redesign could arrive in 2025, and production could shift to Mexico from Belvidere, Ill.”
Belvidere gets:
Charger: For the 2022 model year, a deluxe security alarm comes standard on Scat Pack, SRT Hellcat and SRT Hellcat Redeye variants of the speedy sedan, which is a magnet for car thieves. The alarm is included in the driver convenience group on other models. Production could move from Canada to Belvidere, Ill., in 2024, when a redesigned model offering up to 500 miles of range is introduced on the automaker's electrified STLA Large platform. The current gasoline-powered version will last until at least 2024.

It would only make sense that Pacifica would join Cherokee in Toluca if they are staying with CUSW.
That would allow Windsor to switch to RAM Pickup, and adding Windsor topple F-Series as “America’s Best Selling Vehicle line”.

It is consistent that they move plants with each new model to keep production running. So what goes the Brampton at then end of the shuffle? Automotive News is subscription though. Not pay for rumor mill when you can come here for free.

Agree!
But moving Pacifica and Cherokee staying in CUSW is still surprising.
Isn’t Windsor similar in capacity to Sterling Heights?

Wasn’t the next Cherokee a.k.a. “KM” supposed to be turning RWD?

I told you guys they were looking to add an additional Ram plant. The Windsor EV thing never made sense to me. And of course, that earlier promise Chrysler Portal promise was never actually contractually binding with the Canadian Auto Workers. Did you think that was a coincidence? Of course not. But it served its purpose and made good headlines for a year or two. Anyways, Windsor will be just fine - they'll be making a high margin vehicle and there will be lots of overtime.

btw - Jeep won't be chasing the $4.5K EV incentive, outside of the PHEV WL75 variant and some sort of Wagoneer PHEV variant. That is if the stimulus bill even gets passed, which is now looking doubtful.

Chrysler EVs if and when they happen, will be built in Mexico.

What do you think will happen to the Jeep KL program? Continue idling plant for the remainder of the year?

Cherokee is not important product on the grand picture .
Therefore with chip shortage, RAM/ Wagoneer family/Wrangler-Gladiator/new Grand Cherokee all have priority for chips.

Everyone is putting Chips in the highest value vehicle. Local example Which plant between the Full sized Ford Truck and SUV or the Escape Plant is getting the chips?

I would say that Cherokee as it is is not so important product on the grand picture.
US only product and so on.

KM could be much more important if properly executed.

It is important.... it just when you allocating Chips you do it based which models make the most money and where the chips are in the logistics stream.

People like to assign all these deep means, and then say this is what is wrong with the product. NOPE just on margin hierarchy it down stream from other US build Jeeps that are in higher margin classes.

Yep. Wouldn’t matter if it was chips or a shortage of fireproof hose - when your resources are constrained, you allocate them to the product with the biggest returns.

In any case, the automotive chip crunch is expected to clear by early 2022, as the suppliers reassert their order slots with chip-makers. The real problem for auto-makers was that they allowed their suppliers to cancel orders at a time of capacity constraints: that made it hard to restore supplies - foundries quickly found new customers to fill those vacated slots, and the auto suppliers had to go to the end of the queue when they returned.

Not sure or familiar with the exact build-point, and how different it’s from Compass’s Small-wide, but since both Pacifica and Cherokee share the same CUSW platform, it would make since to have all these 3 built at Toluca.
None of these 3 is a best seller and both Windsor and Belvidere are under utilized.

The question is how much it would cost to retool 3 assembly plants (Brampton, Windsor and Belvidere) to whatever they are going to build next.

I think that plant is pretty flexible... I haven't been there but always seem to adjust to a pretty wide range of products.

Fiat Chrysler proved that Americans will buy Jeeps made outside of America. The next-generation Cherokee (KM) will make its debut in the 2024 model year. The next-generation Compass will be hitting the market in the 2025 model year. So Toluca could be a good place to build both. Toluca can run multiple vehicles on its lines it did so with the Compass, Journey, and 500.

What if Toluca built a front drive based mid-size pickup truck. There have been internet rumors of and on over the past months of such a beast on the drawing boards. This Dakota replacement would be larger than the Toro. These rumors might be originating from wishful thinking after the Ford Maverick introduction, so don't take this too seriously. But if the Cherokee was to stay front drive it could share the platform with such a truck, as the Escape and Maverick do.
