Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Is A V12 Flagship Monster
The company's new range-topper should offer the best of both the GT and supercar worlds.
After tons of spy photos, taken mostly at the Nurburgring, Aston Martin has finally revealed its new Super GT flagship, the DBS Superleggera. Replacing the Vanquish S, the revived DBS is a car “dedicated to delivering an unforgettable driving experience and class-leading in-gear acceleration.”
Marking the return of both the DBS and Superleggera illustrious names, the vehicle is based on an evolution of the lightweight aluminum structure of the DB11, which uses forged double wishbones at the front and a sophisticated multi-link layout at the rear. As standard, it also comes with adaptive damping and a choice of three driving modes, GT, Sport, and Sport Plus, controlling the powertrain.
Speaking of the engine, power comes from a 5.2-liter V12 biturbo engine, generating monstrous 715 horsepower (533 kilowatts) and 664 pound-feet (900 Newton-meters) of torque, available between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm. The motor is mounted low and as far back in the chassis as theoretically possible for an optimized weight distribution and lower center of gravity.
Power is channeled to the rear wheels through a newly-developed eight-speed automatic gearbox by ZF. A mechanical limited-slip differential and torque vectoring allow for precise torque delivery and provide “a predictable and exploitable handling and a lower final drive for explosive in-gear acceleration.”
This setup, Aston Martin promises, delivers the best of both worlds – the explosive response of a supercar combined with the refinement of a true GT. The sprint from a standstill to 62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) in just 3.4 seconds comes only to prove this statement. The 100 mph (160 kph) mark is hit after 6.4 seconds, while the top speed is electronically governed at 211 mph (340 kph).
The standard equipment features a lot of cool extras and gadgets, including leather upholstery, keyless entry and engine start, tire pressure monitoring system, and a 360-degree camera with park assist. Of course, there’s also an infotainment system with integrated satellite navigation system, Bluetooth audio and phone streaming, iPod, iPhone and USB playback.
“The DBS Superleggera not only marks the return of a great Aston Martin name, but signals our return to the very pinnacle of the Super GT sector,” Andy Palmer, Aston Martin’s CEO, comments. “Handsome beyond measure, its lightweight carbon composite and aluminum body is sculpted into a shape with tremendous presence and charisma.”
U.S. sales of the new DBS Superleggera are scheduled to kick off in the fourth quarter of this year with prices starting at $304,995.
