Grand Caravan Returns As Value-Based Offering For Canadians...​

We recently discussed the changes to the Chrysler Voyager for the 2022 model year. Chrysler re-introduced the Voyager nameplate to the American market as the value-based minivan option, making the popular Pacifica a more upscale offering. Although the Voyager will be offered a fleet-only option for the 2022 model year, its Canadian counterpart will have a different story for the new model year.

I’m reminded what a bunch of dingalings we’ve had dreaming up the marketing at Daimler/Fiat/stale antis for decades now. Who in their right mind cancels a model that has sold millions and remained a top seller until the day it was dropped, then renames it by another brand and expects anyone to follow their madness? Funny, I don’t see any Buick Malibu’s or Lincoln Taurus’s or Lexus Camry’s floating around. As inept as GM and Ford may be , they haven’t made that inexplicable move yet. But those in charge of Dodge and Chrysler have. And we wonder why we are seeing the waning days of our long cherished Mopar brands.
 
Well said BWS, this renaming is a joke. Want to pull a name out of the hat from the 50’s or 60’s, maybe, but nothing to recent. First the Pacifica name on the mini van? Wrong! Should have saved it for a new Chrysler SUV, and left it Town and County. Voyager on a Chrysler? Ugh! Now Grand Caravan on a Chrysler. Double ugh!! What’s next, a Dodge Cuda, oh wait some want that!! Sorry Cuda is a Plymouth not a Dodge!

The Dodge and Plymouth Neon were decided in a pre-Daimler Auburn Hills. Daimler introduced us to the Chrysler Voyager before the cappuccino machines were installed in that same Auburn Hills facility. Remember the Prowler? When was it re-branded?

Right. Exactly. You have reinforced the point I made and I appreciate it. As I said, this has gone on for decades. As you point out , it started with Eaton . There is no surprise.

As clearly stated here, there have been a string of product launches and marketing blunders and product cancelations at our present and former management teams to shock the senses and write a book. And now the fate of the Chrysler brand rests therein. Shocking. Freightening!!
The Pacifica is an excellent product, a many times award winner, yet these guys have mangled that from launch to cancelling an SUV Pacifica based spinoff for a Chrysler brand with none in today’s market. That level of mismanagement takes effort and the inability of Pacifica to capture hearts and minds and sales to boot lies squarely at the feet of this team. Sure the chip shortage has played a role, did not a recent US President promote a “Made in America” policy, but I digress, clearly the mess around Pacifica and Chrysler in general is too sad for words. Some major investment in Chrysler, some talented and devoted to the brand managers and a few pink slips might change things, but a fleet only Voyager decision does not confidence build. How about giving the folks responding to this thread a listen, their advice comes cheap. Did someone say build a Chrysler SUV? Sure wasn’t an internal memo.
 
Why are you guys bashing the Pacifica?
It is the best selling Minivan since it’s introduction in 2016, and only losing to Honda in 2019.

Making a product is always based on a case study and risk analysis.
If the case didn’t meet the target or if it was shown than making a product under Jeep will make it more recognizable and profitable, then it will go that way.

A book nobody would buy for even a $1!
The whole concept of family ownership is to avoid wasting company time on responding to nonsense and misguided activism. It all circles back to 2015 direction of the North American business lead by Sergio Me and @TripleT have explain this to you countless of times with high regards of respect & kindness: Let’s go back to 2014 Chrysler finances.
Still, Chrysler's earnings and profit margins trail those reported by its crosstown rivals.
Chrysler profit as a percentage of sales was 4.6% in the quarter, compared with 9.5% for GM's North American division and 7.1% for Ford's North American operations for the same period.
The company's profit margins also are under pressure because it puts a richer mix of content into its vehicles than competitors that isn't always reflected in the sales price.
"Clearly, we are the fastest growing manufacturer at the moment in the U.S. marketplace," Palmer said. "As we upgrade our vehicle portfolio, we continue to focus on growing the market share, and improving our price position as we upgrade our products."
Note, Richard Palmer FIAT/Stellantis CFO (been CFO pretty much since Sergio become CEO of FIAT) basically stated Chrysler been providing too much a deal on comparable vehicles vs GM & Ford.
Now since the 2015 direction, Stellantis sells vehicles at a premium to GM (pre chip shortage:2020 &2021) despite GM having Cadillac (especially Escalade) & Denali at GMC.

Just the opposite, it is a remarkable vehicle that deserves better from management and their pattern of poor execution. Still rooting for them to right the ship and save Chrysler.

Then Grand Caravan goes back goes back to conversation we had about pricing/revenue/margins.
That has nothing - zero- to do with my comment. So what point are you making? We all understand they labeled it as grand caravan to take it down market. Just like they did with Voyager. And in the process the public is confused and the brand is watered down and made to have no recognition or identity. Which is pretty much right where we are. So. Again, what’s your point?

So, some good , some bad. Cases can always be made either way. But in the case of THIS VEHICLE that the thread is about, execution has been poor. Good vehicle , poorly marketed. Good grief, the old model out sold it until the day it was dropped!

You mean the same decision Ford made.
If the market was as confused (which is not correct) Stellantis marketshare would crash, IT HAS NOT.
Dropping Dart, 200, Grand Caravan were/are excellent decisions.
Grand Caravan became old profitable,but revenue per model is too low justify new revamp to meet new safety standards. Furthermore it doesn’t in with Company focuses of Dodge as a performance brand, higher pricing and Margins.
