What Is Under The Hood Of The Upcoming 2023 Dodge Hornet C-SUV?

For the past two years, we have discussed the Dodge brand’s intentions of bringing a new performance SUV to the market to replace the gap in the lineup left by the successful but outdated Dodge Journey. As Dodge continues to boast itself as a “muscle car” brand in the United States and Canada, the American automaker is set to launch a new two-year enthusiast plan called “Never Lift” in the fourth quarter of this year. The plan is to give the public a look at the brand’s product and action plans for the next two years. One of those all-new products is a new SUV – called the Hornet.

I was thinking the plugin hybrid version would simply use the front drive based 4Xe version found on the Jeep Compass/ Renegade twins.

It will. What else?

I am certainly not the only person that has been clamoring for a Journey replacement and that it must be sleek in style, performance in character and an affordable crossover with Dodge appeal. This one checks the boxes, even the Hornet name creates the buzz fans had anticipated, demanded actually and now we see Dodge will deliver. Not a minute to soon frankly. Must have a Scat Pack model too.

IMO, Scat Pack should only be a Natural Aspirated V8.
They still have R/T and SRT.

The 4Xe in Compass and Renegade is based on 1.3l with combined output either 190hp or 240hp.
The 4Xe in Cherokee is based on GME-4T 2.0l and makes 270hp.
Either one can be used and both are PHEV. The 2.0l version is fit to be R/T model, while the 1.3l with 240hp is good for GT model.

Makes sense, but no hard and fast definition on models. Instead of a Scat Pack bee they give us a Hornet with wheels. Call it Scat Pack Turbo. Definitely needs all the visual ques to stand out among the crowded SUV offerings. Look at how well they did that with the hulking Durango. Fun for fans anticipating this Hornet.

SRT4 would be appropriate with the a version of the electric turbo north of 300hp

Let’s see if they have the appropriate drivetrain and if they had the performance version in plan during engineering and if Stellantis management would like the idea.

They already have versions of the 2.0T that is well north of 300... adaption of that is more than enough. With AWD given the weight it is fully worth of the name

Totally agree. Dodge management is fully aware of the performance expectations of customers and as I noted they will surely deliver all the visual necessities associated with Dodge. I owned and raced a 1991 Eagle Talon AWD turbo four and it was a blast. Won the ‘91 Mopar Maple Grove Eliminator and the Street Eliminator at the Atlantic Nationals in it, beat lots of muscle cars and it was a solid, consistant(AWD benefit) 13 second car that was a sleeper on the street way back when. Yea, the Hornet will be fun. Hey, T, you will hate this, but what about a Talon type sports car based off the Hornet? Dodge Stinger Turbo four with AWD. Come on T, can you dig it?

Do you mean the future 4Xe in the new Grand Cherokee?

Or the 2.0T in the Cherokee?

The 2.0T in Cherokee. The 4Xe in the new Grand Cherokee most likely is going to be similar to the Wrangler's 4Xe.

I suspect the rear drive based Jeeps will have a slightly more potent version of the 2.0 GME-T under the hood. Look at this recent concept.

Under the hood, the Jeepster Beach Concept uses a high-tech 2.0-liter GME-T4 turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a custom, concept calibration that increases the engine output about 25% above the production version to 340 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft. of torque. The direct-injection engine uses a twin-scroll, low-inertia turbocharger mounted directly to the cylinder head, along with a dedicated cooling circuit for the turbocharger, intake air, and throttle body for exceptional responsiveness, performance and fuel efficiency.

Rumors persist that the next Cherokee will be rear drive based. Too bad if it is only four cylinder powered.:sneaky:
