2008 Mega Cab 1500 towing

Hello,
I am looking at towing a 8-9k bumper pull travel trailer. Everything I have read shows that the 2008 Mega Cab 1500 is a half ton truck but the chassis, suspension, and axles are the same as a 2500. Am I missing something? Would a 1500 with 8 lug rear axle be able to tow the same as a 2500? Thank you in advance. Just don’t want to buy a truck that can’t to my trailer.

The 2006 to 2008 Dodge Ram Mega Cab 1500 model features a standard 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with a five-speed automatic transmission and boasts a maximum payload of 2,430 lbs., a maximum trailer weight of 8,750 lbs. and Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of 15,000 lbs.

So even though it has a 2500 chassis and the 8 lug rear end it can only tow a trailer 8750? My Tundra is a 5 lug rear end with the 5.7 and is rated at 10,400 towing. What am I missing? If the 08’ mega cab was built on the 2500 chassis and running gear, why isn’t the towing rated the same as a 2500?

You can do whatever you want, but doesn't change the fact that you'll be over the published limitations.

People have the same argument with power wagons reduced GVWR and GCWR relative to regular 2500, just due to the softer suspension set up.

Actually weigh the trailer wet and loaded, to see where you land. Use WDH for extra measure. If its 9k and loaded up youre actually pushing 10k - not ideal for long trips but up to you if weight is distributed properly. I don't know if the leafs are less rigid on the 1500 version, which would not be fun fighting wind and sway on long trips. And get a good load range E tire. i'm sure you're not still on the OEM set, but if someone put a 1500 Pmetric or lower load tire on it that's not ideal.
