Stellantis has officially been granted a U.S. patent for a retractable front license plate bracket, a tech-forward solution aimed at balancing vehicle design, engine cooling, and legal compliance. The patent, filed on October 20, 2023, was approved by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on April 24, 2025.

About six years ago I cross shopped the Jeep Cherokee Overland and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. Similar price with the edge on tech going to Jeep and on driving dynamics to the Alfa. I thought performance about equal but past experience with the Pentastar six edging out anything with a turbo. Biggest edge to Alfa on front seats and storage. To this day, anything Italian gets my attention.
Biggest downer for the Alfa, living in New York, was the awful placement on the front bumper of the license plate. It destroyed the entire front look.
Yup, to my current complete satisfaction, I bought the Jeep.
Had this retractible plate feature been around, harder decision.
Folks at Alfa thank you for this innovation. New Yorkers are elated.
