Brand Will Pivots to Offer Gas, Hybrid, and Electric Powertrains​

In a big move that’s been building behind the scenes for months, Chrysler has officially confirmed to us, it’s no longer going all-electric by 2028. Instead, the brand is embracing what it calls a “multi-energy” future—offering customers internal combustion (gas), hybrid, and electric vehicle (EV) powertrain options.

Imagine if Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep used this same technology in STLA Large vehicles -


This is what Ram is doing with the Ramcharger 1500. To my knowledge, no one has done this yet in a E or D segment unibody vehicle. The BYD Shark (smaller frame-platform pickup) is a series hybrid. But nothing in the E or D segment, yet.

The future is series hybrids.
 
Availability = Obsolescence. The Mazda MZ-30 R-EV and the pure battery electric MX-30 are being dropped from the lineup. Our market never saw the R-EV version and the EU overlords are still bent on banning all IC engines. The Chinese built Mazda EZ-6 doesn't offer the piston range extender option in Europe but it is sold elsewhere in global markets. Rumor has it that the next generation rotary range extended EV system will be an option in the Mazda 3 replacement. It would be nice to see that here. It is probably more cost effective to offer alternative power trains as an option on a regular production model than to offer an exclusive model for an EV. Toyota thinks so anyway.

This happened last year. Be patient, smaller range extended EVs are on the way.
 
And why does one think the Range Extension technology is superior than series or parallel hybrid technologies??
Why would an ICE engine be their only to charge the battery when it can be used, with the proper hybrid technology, to do both, recharge the battery and still drive on ICE engine?
 
Range Extended EVs are series hybrids.

Series hybrid is better because Chrysler / Dodge / Jeep would control their own destiny and would build their own engines (to power the battery) and motors (which they've already designed for the crappy pure EVs, but at least they can be repurposed) , instead of relying on the insanely expensive latest generation ZF hybrids which ZF is manufacturing capacity constrained by and overcharges STLA for.

There is a reason you will never see a Plug-In hybrid with a ZF transmission below $60K. You get more for your money with a series hybrid. If they can get E segment vehicles out for the same price, $60K or so, they've got a home run winner.

At the end of the day, the series hybrid is 2/3 EV and 1/3 gas. Current Jeep 4xE Grand Cherokees and Wranglers are the opposite - 2/3 gas and 1/3 EV.

But any vehicle that has 75 miles of EV range is classified as an EV and is eligible for the full $7500 EV credit. Series hybrids are the way to go / the future, and a perfect political hedge for whatever happens.

That's perfect. You can probably get a 35-37 KwH battery in an E-segment vehicle (Grand Cherokee) and get just over 75 miles of range, which is the magic number to classified as an EV and be eligible for the full $7500 credit.

Almost all the Chinese extended range EVs use this drivetrain design, but with a common four cylinder motor instead of the Patriot's two cylinder.

An unspecified automaker in China will soon be using Magna's latest range extending transmission, I think it allows the IC engine to drive the wheels directly under certain conditions. The Chevrolet Volt also allowed direct use of the IC engine under highway conditions. It rendered the ENVI technology instantly obsolete. Nearly two decades later, the basic drivetrain design of the Chrysler ENVI concepts still is what the Chinese are building. Front engine and generator with rear drive e-motor. The battery technology has greatly advanced since then however.

Extended Range drives saves batteries. Most vehicles of this type only require 1/4 of the battery capacity of the similar pure battery electric drive. The Japanese automakers are using the phrase "multi pathways" to describe their drive system strategies. No one system is superior to the next, as each system may be a better solution for a given set of driving conditions. The plugin hybrids based on the legacy TRW design, Pacifica, Prius, Escape use 1/6 the batteries. Regular hybrids an even smaller fraction of what an EV uses.

The Mazda EZ-6 uses the same basic drive train design as this Chrysler, except with much better batteries and twice the IC engine size.

I know you want to be an optimist for our beloved brand, but.... While the direction is absolutely correct, she is all talk and no product thus far....

I have and remain a critic of Chrysler’s leadership which even from this video clearly shows she knows nothing besides reading off a prepared script about the Chrysler legacy. Instead of posing next to that beautiful Chrysler, she should sit in it, experience it and try, just try hard, to feel the vibes of Chrysler history. Most car people would drool over that car. No drool here.
This suggests a DEI hire who might have a solid business background but lacks the essentials for this job. She projects insincerity, an obvious lack of appreciation and confidence in her words loud and clear. Show this person the door ASAP. Chrysler needs a drool, desperately.

While i think the bulk of Stellantis EV efforts should go to Chrysler, it is smart not to make them all EV
 
Why is everyone so hung up on the Halcyon? Now the new sedan will look like it? Give me a break, it looks less like a Chrysler than the Airflow, that got slammed by its cookie cutter looks. The Halcyon should be in the Dodge line up with a Hemi RWD. If the Viper isn’t coming back this would be a good replacement. It would give the Vette at Chevy a good run for its money! No pun intended.
 
I’ll worry about means of propulsion when there’s an actual product. Chrysler has…..nothing. Pitiful

Totally agree, it shows an aggressive effort reflective of adventurous thought, but not a realistic thematic styling signature. The new 300 sedan will most likely be spun off the Charger family including their power trains plus a hybrid with, based on this new marketing philosophy, one based on heritage we have been clamoring for, a next generation Chrysler sedan styled with heritage and recognizable styling cues. The Halcyon demonstrated hidden team talents, something futuristic, but nothing that should define the Chrysler brand, that lies in that red 55 Chrysler we see in this video. I think the enthusiasm we saw stems from the concept’s beyond the envelope styling and tech ideas and not its possible value as a brand reality direction. If that be the mission, all is lost in the silly promises for the Halcyon made in the video that we Chrysler folk know clearly will never,ever be the Chrysler we want and need desperately.
 
So I came upon this interesting article that talks about 4 variants of the STLA Large plaform. It sounds like they basically updated the Lx, CUSW/RT, Giorgio, and WL platforms and modified them to accept the various EV, ICE, and hybrid drivetrains.
