New Opel, Shares Architecture With New Compass, Hints At Possible Powertrain​

Opel is expanding its new Grandland lineup with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, giving European customers a more affordable alternative to fully electric vehicles (EVs). Built on the same STLA Medium platform as the upcoming Jeep® Compass (J4U), which is set to debut in April, the Grandland PHEV offers an ideal balance of performance, efficiency, and practicality. This move reflects Stellantis’ broader strategy to provide multiple powertrain options in response to growing concerns over the high costs of EVs in Europe. A mild-hybrid version is also available, reinforcing Opel’s commitment to accessible electrification.

I'm having a hard time figuring out whose transmission is installed for this Opel PHEV. Until recently if it was a 7-speed DCT hybrid it was a Magna built unit. Stellantis has recently hinted they will add a gear to the Punch unit when they build an upgraded transmission for PHEV service. Judging by the silence on the transmission details it's probably a carry over until that Punch upgrade arrives.

It is interesting to note the battery size is around 18 kWh. This fits in with the statements by Magna that range extended EVs only need a quarter of the battery capacity of a similar EV. Coincidently, the Mazda rotary engine range extended hybrid also has a similar sized battery.

Like it or not, with the 1.6 liter coming from Dundee, Mi for our market, the Compass will have a similar PHEV setup to this Opel.
