The recently retired 5.7L Eagle V8 engine dates back to 2003 and had some needed modifications in 2009. Since then it has been unchanged except for the addition of e-torque in 2019. It performed amazingly well in that 22 year span. The Hemi name itself helped sell a lot of cars and trucks. If Dodge and Ram do bring back a new V8, it needs to be a somewhat clean sheet design in a smaller displacement format. A 4.0L with twin turbos may be just about right. Hopefully, this meets the upcoming emission standards by the incoming and future administrations.
By stating this I am not dissing the 3.0L I6. I have seen reviews of this engine that are pretty darn good. And I love the idea of an I6 for a truck. But from a marketing standpoint, it is not a Hemi V8 (neither was the Eagle actually). And Americans, especially, red-blooded, carnivorous, etc... ones, want a V8. It's what we have grown up with and it is a status symbol. And most people are willing to pay more for driving a status symbol than for something that makes sense for their transportation needs. Stellantis needs to give the resources to Dodge and Ram to deliver for their buying public. It's all about giving the customer what he or she wants.
Also, it's hard to blame Stellantis for dropping the V8 from it's lineup and aggressively pursuing BEV's. They were only doing what their respective governments were mandating thru fines and regulations. And if you see what price Tesla stock is doing, why not want a piece of that pie? I understand the metrics but also I don't agree with our government in this regard. I am hoping that Ram and Dodge have a contingency plan for a new ICE V8.
