Stellantis Invests $406 Million in Michigan for EV and Hybrid Expansion

Supports Electric Ram 1500, Ramcharger, and Jeep EVs...

Stellantis has announced a significant investment of over $406 million across three key facilities in Michigan, reinforcing its commitment to a “multi-energy” strategy. This approach supports the production of vehicles with a range of powertrains, including electric, range-extended, and internal combustion engine (ICE) models. The Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP), Warren Truck Assembly Plant (WTAP), and Dundee Engine Plant (DEP) are set to receive this funding to prepare for the production of new vehicles and components.

A range extender for the Jeep Recon would be a huge plus. With all the plugin vehicles in the pipeline, Stellantis had better get their marketing operation in order. They blew it with the Hornet, but that's another thread.

Nevertheless, it wasn't any real big news. It was just a continuation of their former plans.

Although nothing new, it should put to rest (for now) the gossip that Stellantis is abandoning (selling) North America.
Have they mishandled and frankly insulted the North American market and operations ? Absolutely YES!
Are they that business ignorant to walk away from their most lucrative market and potential for growth. Absolutely NOT!
When put into perspective, this years dismal results and publicized dealer pushback should wake them up. If not, I may revise my comments.
Not the best news, but not negative.

I was expecting to see these vehicles sooner than later. But if they’re just tooling up now- who knows when we will see a Ramcharger. I paid $100 to get on the list months ago and haven’t heard a peep— until today, when this press release hit my alerts.

The 1.6 announcement is a good news for those of us advocating HEV sooner than later.

Again, Stellantis, North America needs to focus three engines, two platforms, one EV powertrain setup and pretty much just one transmission in two variations.
Platforms: STLA LARGE, STLA FRAME
Engines: HURRICANE-4 EVO, HURRICANE-6 S/O, HURRICANE-6 H/O
Transmission; ZF Gen-4 8speed in both conventional and hybrid
EV: Ramcharger 800V EV system w 3.6L onboard generator
Literally that's all Stellantis needs to focus on for the North American market.

It has been going on for nearly a decade that the Pacifica PHEV has been out. There haven't been any significant improvements to the e-Flite trans-axle. Toyota has advanced their hybrid system by two generations during that time. Honda is introducing a next generation hybrid in the Civic. Perhaps an updated front drive based hybrid system for a Rampage or even the Ram ProMaster would be nice.

Stellantis should also better focus on affordability. I don't mean going after the Korean brands or the Nissan Versa. I shouldn't have to buy $2,500 worth of options just to get cloth upholstery in a HD Ram pickup.

The cost per mile for operating an 800V EV is twice that over a similarly sized diesel model. This is because the electricity loads required for that level of charging speed is priced wiith demand charging by the utilities, very expensive.

While I'm on the subject of EV charging, the executive leadership of the company I work for had their yearly presentation on the health of the business. When discussing the alternatives to traditional petrol fueled ICE powered vehicles, not all of our locations can have charging stations. In some areas of the country the local electricity grid simply won't support a decent setup. Those solar powered charging stations in the middle of nowhere which Jeep previewed are level 2, that's 240V.
