“HALO SEDAN” – The 2006 Chrysler Imperial Concept Luxury Sedan:

More Than Just A LWB Chrysler 300...

Like the great Chrysler Imperials of the past, the 2006 Chrysler Imperial Concept was designed as Chrysler’s halo luxury sedan. Using the same elements of past models, the Imperial was designed to be elegant, provocative, and attainable.

I still have the Imperial addiction, having come close on owning one, but not yet. No surprise, while controversial, the 2006 concept I find one I wish was built. Sure there are some things I would change and the factory would have changed, but the distinctive Imperial essence is there without question. Love it or hate it, this concept might have found enough buyers to be profitable and provided guys like me something to get excited over. Right now, I am looking to the upcoming Airflow to feed my Chrysler hunger. Maybe another Imperial someday, just maybe. Forever hopelessly addicted.

I saw this concept at the Chicago auto show, hard to believe this was 15 years ago. The prestige market has moved on to vehicles like the Ram 1500 Limited and the Grand Wagoneer. The new Hummer EV is GM's attempt to be the top dog in this market.

The luxury sedan class has been totally redefined by startups such as Tesla and Lucid Motors. A contemporary Chrysler Imperial sedan will have to possess some technical prowess to earn its place in this radically changed market segment. The Dodge Hornet was another concept from around the same time as the Imperial. The Hornet was thought to be stillborn, but now something is in the works. I think another Imperial is possible. I will explain this in another post.

Creating an Imperial for the Twenties decade.

The Imperial concept was a nonstarter in 2006 when Daimler was calling the shots. Whether of not the market would accept such a sedan was irrelevant, there would be no stepping on Mercedes toes. The corporation was tossed to the curb and a leveraged buyout firm picked the scraps up. During this time the economy was in a meltdown and to win government favor a series of concepts with alternative powertrains were paraded out. One of these was the Chrysler Eco-Voyager of 2008. Unlike the ENVI battery electric and range extended EVs, the Eco-Voyager used a hydrogen fuel cell for a range extender. Back then, such a powertrain was pie in the sky thinking. Today such technology is found optional in some of the Stellantis brands' LCVs. The recently introduced Fiat Scudo doesn't offer the FC range extender but it shares much with its corporate cousins which do.

Here is a write up on the Eco-Voyager.

Now there is nothing about the exterior of the jelly bean shaped Eco-Voyager that says Imperial. The stubby snout of the concept seems to be the antitheses of the Imperial styling lineage. Please ignore the exterior and go right to the interior. This concept has large doors and plenty of interior space with generous legroom. The reintroduced Fiat Scudo is now built on the EMP2 platform, which is presently undergoing transformation into the STLA medium platform. I would use that as a base. GM has successfully created large crossovers on what was basically a minivan platform with the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave and indeed they used the formula established by the original Chrysler Pacifica crossover. As far as power goes, there should be plugin electric, battery electric and the FC battery hybrid electric. There aren't enough hydrogen stations to make such a an option practical, but it should be offered just to generate controversy. Such a vehicle is going after Tesla and Lucid Motors after all.
