When it comes to rare Mopars, few cars get enthusiasts buzzing like the 1969 Plymouth Barracuda M-code 440. Built in extremely limited numbers, these small-bodied A-cars were factory hot rods—stuffing Chrysler’s massive 7.2-liter (440-cubic-inch) Super Commando V8 into a lightweight platform that was more often seen with slant-6s or small-blocks. Now, one of just 45 notchback coupes produced is up for grabs on Bring a Trailer, and it’s got a history as colorful as its Limelight Metallic paint.

My race car was a 1969 Barracuda notch back that I bought from a guy who used it as a grocery getter. Cheap enough to gut and race, but I really wanted a fastback. As fate would have it, a little muscle/ race modifications turned that Plymouth into a mean looking car that I fell in love with. So tough looking and lean and mean. It truly became a drag race killer with which I won many a high profile regional race events mostly in the North East. Hit the papers with a couple of wins. I still have the clippings and photos.
Car was featured in Mopar Muscle Magazine as my racing ventures actually generated a following. I was shocked as people sought me out to chat and some were calling themselves fans. Really! A guy with a PhD finding fame drag racing.
Bottom line, this featured car really resonates with me. This one is hard to pass up, but at 80, my old car hobby is in the past. I hope someone will enjoy this overlooked and under appreciated, like I once did, mean machine.
