Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep®, and Ram, has once again had to open its checkbook due to failing to meet U.S. fuel economy rules. According to a new report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker paid $190.6 million in penalties this year alone.

Absolute nothing burger compared to the billions lost on EV variants. Fortunately STLA Large can fit the Hemi.

"OK Sherman set the Wayback Machine to the year 2019 and let's see what FCA was selling to bring on these fines."

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2)
Wheelbase - 114.8 inches
Length - 189.8 inches
Engine lineup
Pentastar V6 285hp
5.7 Hemi 360hp
6.4 SRT Hemi 475hp
6.2 Supercharged Hemi 707hp

Back to today

2026 Jeep Cherokee (KM)
Wheelbase - 113 inches
Length - 188.1 inches
Powertrain 1.6 liter with electric motors combined power output 210hp

The Wagoner S replaces the SRT and Trackhawk trims.
Wheelbase - 113 inches
Length - 192 inches
Combined power - 500 to 600hp depending on trim

The KM Cherokee is actually a replacement for the WK2 grand Cherokee. Consumers are holding their noses at the Wagoneer S EV which fills in for the SRT and Trackhawk models.

The Jeep Cherokee KM is built on the STLA Large , but has a transverse engine layout. The current Grand Cherokee WL74 and WL75 models lost their Hemi option after 2023. I think it was a premature decision.

Unlike paying fines for missing CAFE targets, the resources spent on electrification can be recouped. The monies spent are investments. The Ramcharger will use the same batteries, e-motors and electrical architecture as the Ram REV. While the Ram REV seems ill fated, the outlook for the Ramcharger still looks positive. The Dodge and Jeep battery electric models can be fitted and fixed with range extenders.

The only investment in the Dodge Hornet is the front sheet metal and some trim pieces. The PHEV system of the AR Tonale is from a supplier. The PHEV system in the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4Xe models is from ZF, Jeep can drop the plug and covert it to a regular hybrid operation using less batteries.
