All-New 2026 Jeep® Cherokee (KM) Prepares for Debut Late 2025

Jeep’s First-Ever North American Hybrid-Only SUV Breaks Cover This Year

Jeep® fans, the wait is almost over. The all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee (KM) is on its way, and it’s bringing a big change with it: it’s going hybrid-only. That’s right—this will be the first North American Jeep vehicle offered exclusively with a hybrid powertrain. No gas-only or plug-in (PHEV) options—just one smart, fuel-saving setup built for adventure.

If it’s hybrid only I’m not biting yet. Perhaps there is a Pentastar V-6 lurking. Ten years in two wonderful current generation Cherokees has me sold on this Jeep, but I’m just not there on a hybrid. I’ll test one for sure but is there any chance us old school gas engine guys get something, you know, old school?

If no ICE only option they have lost a potential customer in me. Hopefully they’ll eventually offer the Pentastar V6 or a 4 cylinder 2.0 litre turbo as in the Hornet. With the shrinking of interest in EVs one would think they should know better than to offer only hybrid power.

Hybrid is not EV. Hybrid is the right powertrain for the majority of customers - no range anxiety but improved efficiency. Plus it removes the dreaded start stop feature since car can move while the engine is off. When done right, many people will not be able to tell a difference in drivability.

Really enjoy the hybrid powertrain in my Camry.

Why then is Toyota is moving all Hybrids? People do not equate EVs with Hybrids at all, and EV interesting is not shrinking it just not growing as fast the product planner envisioned.

Many model now, sales are being limited not because of Hybrids but because for the lack of capacity in hybrids. They in general, unless you get a PHEV behave in way that is invisible to the users. Fill Gas and push the go pedal, PHEV give you the same experience with a start up boast.

I am no longer interested in any vehicle that doesn't have hybrid after owning 2, even the Hurricane Charger likely needs at least a mild boast, to remove the torque converter for me to buy it.

And please let the Pentastar rest in peace, what a wonderful engine for its time, for its time.

Edit: Despite what Forbes said, it looks like we will Get the Punch.... I would prefer a 2.0 with ZF like JGC... Maybe we will get a updated model.

I will wait a few year to see how the Punch does.

I'm a little surprised they went with the Recon-style headlights. I thought they'd do something more similar to the new Compass and GC and that they'd take this opportunity to make the Cherokee more of a mini-GC (despite the technical/powertrain/platform differences). It looks good though-- a little more mainstream (less premium) than the post-refresh KL. Hopefully the power, pricing, fuel efficiency, quality, and handling hit their marks and it becomes a big seller for Jeep.

Toyota has just blurred the lines between hybrid, plugin hybrid and battery electric. I wonder if anybody in Auburn Hills is smart enough to recoup some of their own EV development costs by copying what Toyota is doing with their new PHEV system. Using the e-axle from a corporate EV can be done with a regular hybrid as well as a plugin. Toyota does both.

I would call them more of a modern take on the XJ square lamps….. mimicking the XJ and ZJ departure…. KL while popular for traditionalist to cut on, it was more popular before its polarizing look move vanilla…… the scale change Audi take doesn’t work for me, glad they aren’t following that. KM needs it own look, and a bit of hit of the XJ is overdue.

Agreed 100%

Although I will wonder out loud why they couldn’t have just used the Cherokee name on the Recon and skipped the cost of the development required for the KM Cherokee?

I know that if the hybrid system is solid, and available in a Recon, I’d just assume get a Recon.

Recon will be way more expensive

Has anyone determined if the KM is rear drive based or will have a front drive based transverse engine. The Wagoneer S is all electric so far, so it is hard to determine anything from that. There are four different flavors of the STLA Large platform, the Charger Daytona being rear drive based doesn't solve the mystery.

Another mystery, is the KM hybrid system 48V or high voltage?

The Cherokee and Wagoneer S are repeating history. When the downsized Cherokee was introduced for the 1984 MY there was also a Wagoneer version offered as well.

Just because the KM Cherokee has a regular hybrid drive doesn't rule out that the Recon can't have some type of plugin system. If I was in charge, the alternative drive train option to the pure electric drive on both the Wagoneer S and Recon models would be replacing the front electric drive module with the 1.6 hybrid drive and using a smaller battery pack. Let the electric motors do the talking and the IC engine do the long distance cruising and charging.

Recon is if a better utility Wrangler was made in a Crossover.
This Cherokee is Stellantis answer for a moderate midsize Crossover.

Put the full power i6 in it, i know they wont, but if american automotive makers were still alive and had any shred of soul,it totally could.

Also this thing is UGLY, i like how they showed the best looking bit in that mix of the 3 generation, let it be the middle slice to hide how they totally boned the overall shape of the corners/headlight design lol, pathetic

I have to agree with you Bill. Jeep has always given more than one powertrain for it models, except for the Compass/Patriot twins. This being a NA market exclusive, I don't think they'll try to come directly at Honda and Toyota with a hybrid only, unless its the class leader in every metric and bulletproof.

People continue to project their own bias into the market place. That one would say put a lazy old powertrain in it or I won't buy it, shows it. Please Please put something that is heavy, underpowered, poorly packaged, and less efficient..... is NOT a broader market position.

Lets sit it product meeting a make that pitch, yes there is no ROI and it make the product worse is nearly every aspect weight, power, balance, braking, handling, emission, efficiency, manufacturing complexing, regulatory approval ...... Sure Kevin... here is a paper box your last check will come in Mail ........ but but guys on the Mopar forum want old tech engines cuz even though hybrid tech is proven and in high demand everywhere else and decades old just because they are new adverse. Great Kevin you want us to compete with our own Used vehicles? Good luck in life.

We want affordability... Build one powerplant and build it well. I not concerned at all with it being Hybrid, in fact it would be suicide NOT to offer it as Hybrid, I am not concerned with it being exclusively a Hybrid.... I am concerned that it is PSA based.

My expectation is this is the FWD Large so the engine will run direction for best packaging.... So if there is another powertrain offered I would like to see a upgrade to the 2.0 and e-axle .....

As for putting the Hurricane 6 in it.... LOVE THE Idea... SRT Cherokee.....:D :D :D :D not happening but love it. They should drop the in JGC and Wrangler first though.
