Opel Frontera GRAVEL Hints at Rugged New Jeep® Renegade

Opel Frontera GRAVEL Hints at Rugged New Jeep® Renegade

European Off-Road Cues Could Shape Jeep's Next Subcompact SUV

It might be built for Europe, but the new Opel Frontera GRAVEL is giving us serious clues about what Jeep® could have up its sleeve for the next-generation Renegade. While American eyes are typically drawn to Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, those watching Stellantis’ global strategy closely know that small off-roaders are making a big comeback—just not here yet.

The last Jeep Renegade we saw new is 166" overall on a 101" wheelbase. The Frontera is 172" long with a 105" wheelbase. It is on the longer end of the Smart platform spectrum. On the short end is the Fiat Grande Panda it has 157" overall length on a 100" wheelbase. Sometime next month the Giga-Panda will debut, and its dimensions remain unknown.

It is also important to know that the that the Frontera and the Citroen C-3 Aircross share a lot of structural elements. The C-3 Aircross built in Argentina offers an optional 1.6 four from the PureTech family. The Dundee, MI built 1.6 liter is a newer generation edition of that engine. A Jeep Renegade built on the Smart platform isn't doomed to be three cylinder only.

What follows might be material for a different thread.

One question remains for a potential Smart based Jeep Renegade. Should it be built here? If Chrysler and Dodge are short of product there might be a case to have a line building the small platform. In addition to a Renegade, there could be a Chrysler Portal and some kind of a Dodge hatchback. As far as the Dodge version is concerned, somewhere in the Fiat product introduction cadence is a replacement for the Tofas built Tipo. (My favorite Tipo body style is the wagon.)

Some promising designs coming from this SmartCar platform. Here is an AI-designed Renegade I did from the Grande Panda 4x4.
I was about to aske AI to do te same thing.... I looks nearly perfect.... I would guess the would to the U shaped running lights like on all the other new Jeeps and the Jerry Can taillamps

Cost down and cheap $25K EV model and it would sell like Hotcakes.

I am tired of asking for this... Tipo is right near the Port ...... Shipping from Turkey is reasonable... Why we haven't had a Dodge Tipo Wagon Sport... to fill the bottom of the lineup for the last decade is Maddening. Spent 2 weeks with one in Italy is a fine little economy car even with the lazy diesel.
