VW Reportedly Bringing Back Scout Brand With Electric Pickup And SUV

The company's board of directors is expected to approve the plan today.

For a company with huge resources such as the VW Group, it doesn't come as a surprise the automotive conglomerate wants to cash in on the off-road craze. Reports about a rugged electric SUV emerged in late 2018 and since then we've heard some weird names being speculated, like T-Rug and Ruggdzz. In September 2021, VW Group of America Chief Operating Officer, Johan De Nysschen, hinted at the possibility of an all-terrain vehicle with no emissions.

Fast forward to May 2022, The Wall Street Journal claims that not only will VW green light an electric SUV, but also a pickup truck without a combustion engine. These competent EVs will form the basis of the revived Scout brand as a subsidiary in the United States. The board of directors is believed to approve the plan later today, but production is not expected to commence until 2026. Eventually, VW wants to make as many as 250,000 Scout vehicles per year.

Wouldn't Case IH still have claims to that name or did they not keep it up?

That would be extremely interesting. But I imagine that they'll run into the same issues Ford, GM, and Stellantis are already running into; how do you source enough materials to build the orders you take? We're looking at years to see enough product to meet orders the "Big 3" have already taken for their electric 4x4s as it is.

I am sad to hear this. I had been hoping Case/New Holland would have purchased Navistar to combine them with Iveco, but VW's Man/Scania scooped them up instead.

It would have been nice to have Navistar in the extended family of brands, but that obviously didn't happen.

UPDATE: VW has officially confirmed the news in a statement: "The vehicles will be designed, engineered, and manufactured in the U.S. for American customers. To this end, a separate, independent company will be established in the U.S. this year as the Volkswagen Group moves the strong iconic U.S.-brand Scout into the electric vehicle space. The first prototypes are to be unveiled next year, and production is scheduled to start in 2026. The electrified Scout brand will be built upon a new technical platform concept which brings new pickup and RUV credibility beyond the existing Volkswagen Group portfolio."

Wow. A separate, new US based company. This will be interesting.

It will be interesting to see how saturated the North American market will get with all of these electric pickups.
