UAW Suggests EV Tax Credit Should Only Apply To US-Built Cars

This comes on the heels of GM's and Ford's plans to build EVs in Mexico.

According to a report from Automotive News, late last week the UAW suggested that electric car tax incentives should only apply to cars that are assembled in the US. The existing tax credit of up to $7,500 has no requirement that the cars be made on our shores. The report quotes UAW Vice President Terry Dittes:

For me as a European and Christian democrat (right center in Europe) which also have social democratic notes this whole US tax credit thing doesn't make any sense.

There should be subsidiaries, not tax credit, and they should't be applied for expensive cars.

Second and more on topic. This call by UAW may at the end favour GM or anyone who have dedicated BEV platforms.
For example GM may opt to build all of their BEV cars in US. Problem solved.
On the other hand Stellantis have and will have multienergy platforms. They are able to build ICE, MHEV, PHEV and BEV, on the very same line, on the same platform. They will build it in such way in US, Canada and Mexico. For Stellantis UAW call or action doesn't make sense at all.

Mandatory driving is the practical reality for most people in the United States. Unless a person has access to a car and a drivers license, mobility choices are quite limited for most places in the USA. Tax credits don't make sense for lower income citizens, who don't own homes or itemize on their tax returns.

That's all I can say without going into politics. The electrification of automobiles should involve sound engineering decisions, not based on the prevailing political winds of the moment.

Correct. People also don't understand that the tax credits are not automatically deducted at purchase either. You will get them back when you file your taxes.

But for Stellantis and others these decision are being made to get the stock price up.
