The UAW Sunday morning called a nationwide strike against General Motors, set to start at midnight.

It's the first national UAW strike since 1982. The action does not include Ford and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, whose UAW contracts were extended while the union tries to negotiate a deal with GM that would be template for talks with the other two companies.

I feel the opposite I feel that they'll work out a reasonable deal with General Motors which in the end will benefit Ford and FCA

Just curious why you think that? As it stands now Chevy has shut down how many plants in United States and Canada? UAW isn't exactly happy with them right now and on top of that the uaw wants to try and clear their own image of corruption

For me I don't understand why one company sets the template for the others...

Some companies are doing well like FCA and then Ford and GM are struggling.

UAW leader says GM could have avoided strike: Here's how

In a letter to members Sunday, a UAW leader said a strike could have been avoided.

Terry Dittes, vice president of the union's General Motors Department, said GM waited until the last minute to make a substantive proposal before the contract expired at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.

"We are disappointed that the company waited until just two hours before the contract expired to make what we regard as its first serious offer," Dittes wrote. "Had we received this proposal earlier in the process, it may have been possible to reach a tentative agreement and avoid a strike."

I figure GM is trading a short term, costly inventory adjustment for a long term, cost effective labor agreement. The UAW needs to “strike” a deal quickly before the workers turn on their leadership. The seemingly never ending stream of corruption charges are tough enough to swallow when you’re working but on strike pay it will be enraging.

GMs gambit appears to be to split union from leadership and crush the strike. That’s a risky play since workers feel their backs are against the wall and management is rolling in money right now.

GM dumped health care for striking workers. That poured gas on fire, expert says

Within 36 hours of the UAW strike against General Motors, the Detroit automaker announced a decision to shift worker health care payments to the union immediately — a strategy that risks dragging out the strike, labor negotiators say.

"They're pouring gasoline on the fire," said Harry Katz, the Jack Sheinkman Professor of Collective Bargaining at the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.

"This induces the workers to get more angry. GM thinks this will scare them or get them to rethink the cost of their benefits. I think it's going to backfire. It's quick, rash and insensitive."

I’m more convinced then ever that they’re going to try to break the UAW once and for all. They’re going for the moonshot and it’s going to get hella nasty.

@Freshforged

Yes, it seems so.

In any case I can't understand people which are for the end of UAW maybe they are not the best but I think that Unions should stay.

I will now comment GM's offer.
It came to late. We know why.
But the offer was bad in my opinion. Bad when it comes to keeping US jobs. Production of BEV and batteries needs much less workforce in comparison to production of a car with ICE. It's not factory for factory.

But I really believe that there would be a tentative agreement if GM made it earlier.

Wow, I was not expecting GM to go bare knuckle with the union. This shows that GM believes they have long term options outside using union labor. It could be that they are expecting a dramatic decrease in sales volume, either through internal cuts of models or a market collapse (or both). Another scenario could be (ugh) a potential merger which needs lower labor costs/reduced manufacturing capacity.

Either way, GM just gave membership a big “FU, we have better options” slap in the face. It’s gonna get real ugly.

AFAIK GM still has some big tax breaks which will not be there in the coming years. I think that @AlexB may say more about it.

We don't know how a real blazer would do for them since the new bronco isn't out yet. If those two where to release around the same time it's very likely they would both fail. As for it not being a real blazer it's sure selling pretty damn well and a ton of people i know want one/got one

GM, UAW reach proposed tentative agreement; strike continues

General Motors and the UAW reached a proposed tentative agreement on a new contract Wednesday, the 31st day of a nationwide strike.

Details about provisions of the proposal were not immediately available.

The autoworkers walked off the job at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 16, launching the union's first nationwide strike in 12 years. Their four-year contract had expired at midnight Sept. 14.

The union's National GM Council is to meet Thursday in Detroit to vote on the proposal. A news release from the UAW said workers would remain on strike at least until the council reviews the deal.

It appears UAW members have ratified a new four-year contract with General Motors, which is expected to bring the six-week nationwide strike to an end.

With more than 38,000 UAW members voting, more than half, or 57%, have ratified the agreement, based on Free Press estimates.

The UAW is expected to make an official declaration of results after the voting ends at 4 p.m. Friday. GM is expected to comment after the results are released.
