The biggest modification I had planned was the redesign of the entire rear face of the Coronet. I wanted actual lights, and not a chrome plated tin bezel, to extend the whole way across the rear end. I tried 67 Charger lights, 68 Cougar lights, and finally settled on 1966 Thunderbird tail lights that blink sequentially. I pulled a setup off of one in a salvage yard and scored the sequencer as well which was still wrapped up in the fiber bundle from the factory and was like brand new. The OEM trunk deck lid on the 67 flows down over the back to almost the bumper top. I would need to have it end just above the light bar. This meant the trunk seal rail had to be moved up there as well, and the latch. The quarter panel tail extensions, ( the rear corners), had to be modified to accept the taller T Bird light base which was also shorter by 3" on each end. A new bottom panel would need fabrication to fit under the light base across the center rear. Soo.... I got to cutting.
Along with the lights the second half of this mod was a swap to a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner rear bumper. I wanted the exhaust to poke out through the back up light holes, ( the T Bird light bar has the back up light in the center of the light bar), and I wanted the upsweep on either end of that specific bumper because it matched near perfectly with the down sweep of the quarter extension sides. So, when paired together the outer profile as seen from the rear is a smooth curve top to bottom and the bumper height on the face is nearly as tall as the rear face of the car above the bumper. Symmetry.....it looks like the factory did it. It's cool. Along with these mods I also needed to add more than 4" to the center of that bumper so the ends , after rebending, would line up exactly below the extension sides. The bumper ends were bent around to hug the quarter panel pockets an the pockets cut out and fabricated to exactly match the bumper ends. I also ground off the bumper end contour lines and welded new metal along the sides that lines up with the quarter panel incoming body lines. I used that same dirty yellow 67 Coronet custom as my inspiration. The fabrication of all of this took nearly a year. I made a lot of mistakes along the way and had to start over twice. Many things are impacted by these changes that may not seem apparent at first. Lots had to be done to make these changes work and look correct.

What good would all of this work be without the right power plant? Well, it's a 1972 440 Magnum big block punched out to 0.40 over, forged steel polished crank, Speed Pro pistons, LY rods with ARP pins, ARP studs, Melling bearings, Mancini Racing billet aluminum rear seal block, Comp Cam 21-306-4 cam 270/470 @50 and lifters, New 440 Stealth pushrods, Miele High Volume Oil pump, double row billet steel timing chain & gear set, March polished aluminum pulleys, new cam bearings, Comp dual valve springs, 316-11, titanium keepers and 10* locks, stock valve train on 346 heads that are fully ported and polished with gasket match to the Weiand single plane intake, three angle valve grind and new bushings and guides, intake powder coated in two colors by Phoenix Specialty Coatings, Black wrinkle finish finned aluminum valve covers, chrome plated timing cover and marker tab, 7 quart Hemi style oil pan with windage tray and sump baffle, Mallory Unilite Distributor with electronic module & 8mm Red Taylor racing plug wires. The carb is a 750 CFM Holley dual feed that has been rebuilt to new and has a plated Summit fuel feed rail with built in liquid filled pressure gauge and electric choke. The water pump is a Mobile Home 440 unit because they have a sewer sized drain, for increased cooling capacity, compared to the car models. It to, along with the power steering pump, is painted in wrinkle Black. The motor machine work and prep was done at RPM Racing Engines in Georgia, VT.
The 727 automatic transmission is a 1974 from behind a 440 six pac. It has hardened steel input and output shafts, four pinion planetaries, 12 spring sprag, 5 disc clutches using Red Eagle Racing discs and Black Kolene steels, a 3.8 ratio lever and billet aluminum band strut, a shift kit and all new bits an bobs throughout. The motor should put out around 484 HP and conversant torque.

I got it to the point where it was time to get her all in one color of primer so this summer I sprayed it twice. Did a little glazing and two more coats. I managed to get the front section in color before I ran out of warm weather. It has three coats of Chestnut Brown Metallic AU and will get cleared with the rest of the car later. I did some assembly on the front end. Got the radiator and cooler restored and mounted, the front suspension and brakes, brake lines and prop valve, the headlight/grill frame and got the headlight bucket halves restored and the grill restored.
Ran some tubing from firewall to front end to pass wires through.

The Express has been painted. Waiting on it to dry and 'lay down' then see where i'm at with it. Working on the 66 T Bird tail lights wiring today. Just spent $2500.00 on parts last week. It's hard to see it in the single car garage. Once I get the tires mounted on the new rims and on the car i can back it out into the sunlight and see it better.

Wow! Thanks for sharing with us!
Thanks for looking! Did a lot of wire identification today on that 66 T Bird taillight harness. Pouring over several schematics and color code charts. Sussing out which wires go forwards to the various devices that control them. Old harnesses are so much fun!!

The Yankee Express is a 1967 Dodge Coronet 500 that has been heavily modified and customized. It's a one off car built for my own enjoyment.
At present, November 2021, it is in primer ( 6 coats) with the front clip painted in body color.
The list of mods and fabrication is long and it's been in the garage since October 2014 with a brief period where I rolled it out onto the driveway in 2018 while testing my steering modifications.
This car, when I purchased it, was a 100% complete example that was running and drivable. It had the factory wheel covers and cert-i-card intact.
It's a 318 V8, A/C, tinted window glass, buddy seat, 3 spd column shift car with 69,000 original miles on it. Cream yellow color with black interior. Everything worked on it when I got it and the rust was minimal with three areas that had been smacked and repaired.
I paid $3750.00 for it.
Now for some back story:
I'm 63 yrs old and spent 30 years in the US Army in combat aviation. I was medically retired from the service in 2015. I'm a combat veteran OIF/OEF and 100% disabled and unemployable.
Knowing that I was about to be retired at 57 years old I made plans to fulfill a life long dream of MOPAR muscle car ownership and building it the way I had dreamed about for decades. I simply never lived in one place long enough to have a reasonable expectation of being able to start and finish a project of this complexity.
I had NOT planned on being retired with TBI and PTSD however and this has made it exponentially more difficult to realize my dream. I'm not a quitter, fortunately.
Prior to purchasing the car I had a lot of ideas banging around in my head about what I wanted to do to it, but, the plan only really came together after I had the old girl home and trapped in the garage.
My pal Rick and I walked around the car and sat around spitballing this and that for mods that COULD be done.
After compiling a long list of crap we tried to filter it by keeping those that would look like the factory did it, and that would blend in so well that anyone who saw the car and knew what it was supposed to look like in stock form would be scratching their heads trying to figure out what had changed. They also had to be symmetrical and not stick out like a sore thumb.
So, here's what I did to it.

Mods:
Front to back------ Front bumper sectioned, shortened, turn signal rectangular holes filled, recurved to fit the new fender noses and to hug the sheet metal. Also enlarged the center license plate cut out into a ram airduct.
1967 Charger grill and revolving headlights. Custom electric headlight motors, mounts and linkages.
Front fender noses swept back to a 90* angle ( Think 70 Road Runner).
Front disc brakes swap from a 76 Aspen.
All rubber bumpers and bearings replaced.
Inner fender close out smooth panels to hide wiring etc.
Smooth firewall with relocated wiper motor to under dash as is everything previously on the firewall.
Battery to box behind passenger seat.
Wiring pass through tubes running along outside of inner fender just below the fender mounting flanges and into the cab through the firewall.
Wiring passthrough boots in the door frames.
2004 Audi A6 Quattro dash/console /steering and center pull E Brake. And everything in/on the dash console too.
Audi door panel elements fabricated into new panels that align with the Audi dash.
Puddle lights and rear facing marker lights on the rear face of the inner door surface, so it can be seen when the door is opened.
Power everything.
Custom steering linkages.
dual M/C and new hoses/lines.
10 way, power/heated bucket seats leather.
1967 Plymouth Sport Fury rear seat topper mounted just behind bucket seat tops and close out roadster type panels from there to the back glass. (Think 59 Corvette)
Audi armrest with 4 analog gauges hidden inside.
GPS speedo
spare tire under the roadster panels in what would have been the center of the rear seat. Close out panel between cab and trunk.
Fabricated shift linkage and lever. Hand made pistol grip and reverse lock out.
Fake quarter panel side scoops opened up.
dual motorcycle pop up gas filler caps, one on top of each quarter near the trunk lid front corners.
fabricate the entire rear face of the car to accept 1966 Thunder Bird tail lights.
Trunk lid on gas lifts
17 gallon fuel cell with dual filler necks.
trunk close out panels
rear wells tubbed
leaf springs relocated to under the frame rails.
center pull E Brake cables
move spring perches
remove spare tire well
1970 Road Runner rear bumper lengthened 4 5/8" and recurved to hug the sheet metal. TTI exhaust to exit through those back up light holes.
Remote trunk release.
'shave gas filler door
ditch the 318 in favor of a built 440 Magnum, and build a 727.

All of these mods have been completed.
Ambitious, I know...that's why it's been under construction since 2014. I had planned on being able to hold a job while building it so that there would be a budget. But, alas, that has not transpired and even more money has gone towards other needs. So, this has been done on no budget in a single space garage bay with simple hand tools. Truly. By me, without assistance. The only part that got farmed out was the motor machine work which went to RPM Racing Engines in Georgia, VT.

So that's the story, pictures and commentary to follow.... thanks for reading.. Ghost.
Keep on keeping on brother!

I am and I will! Got the tires sorted out today and the wheels so I rolled it outside to see what's what with my painting first effort. Not happy with it. Long way to go.

Working today on small engine stuff that would be much harder to do with the engine IN the car. Routing the plug wires past the alternator and the #8 wire next to the valve cover and manifold as well as the coil wire. Also, I made a custom coil mount and incorporated it with the #8 plug wire clamp via a nylon spacer to make it stand off from it, so the coil bracket bolts have space for a nut. I also took loose the power steering reservoir to narrow the various spacers and bring the pulley into perfect alignment with the crank pulley. The custom bracket still needs cleaning up and painting.

Repainted her in Copper Metallic. The Dark Chesnut Metallic under this makes the copper darker and it looks really cool.
