Standoff situation in The Villages ends with chase, dramatic takedown

HE VILLAGES, Fla. —
A suspected armed robber barricaded himself in a home in The Villages for hours on Tuesday before he eventually fled the house and led deputies on a high-speed chase, officials said.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said Brian Davis was arrested after he led deputies on a pursuit that began in the Village of La Belle and ended in Lake County.

Deputies said it all began around 1 a.m. when Steve Wajda, the manager of the Belle Grade Country Club, reported being approached by a man with a gun.

Wajda got into a tussle with Davis, deputies said. At some point, Davis' mask came off and Wajda recognized him as a former co-worker from another restaurant.

Wajda said he was leaving through the side gate with cash to deposit when he was approached.

Wajda said that after the violent confrontation Davis, spent 15 to 20 minutes debating out loud whether he wanted to kill him.

"I got lucky," Wajda said.

Deputies said Davis then fled from Belle Grade County Club to the Village of La Belle, where he barricaded himself inside his girlfriend's parents house.

Nobody was home when Davis barricaded himself inside, deputies said.

Authorities said a SWAT team was in communication with Davis, who told them he didn't want to come out because he didn't want to go back to jail.

After an hours-long standoff, the SWAT team busted out a front window of the home, and David barreled out of the garage in a white SUV, deputies said.

Deputies said they dropped stop sticks in front of the SUV, but Davis was still able to drive it.

As Davis sped out of the garage at least one deputy fired a shot. Davis was not hit, deputies said.

The chase went several miles into The Villages and into Fruitland Park. Chopper 2 captured the chase reach a dirt road while a deputy was ramming Davis’ vehicle from behind.

Davis drove the SUV through fence posts and into a field along Lake Ella Road, where deputies ended the chase with a pit maneuver.

Davis was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

No deputies were injured.
