New Alfa Romeo Giulia 2020 review

Verdict
4.5/5

It might not look much different to the original Alfa Romeo Giulia, and on the road it might not drive much better than before either, but inside, the new MY20 Giulia is a much more competitive proposition. Overall quality is up, the connectivity is much better, and the instruments and infotainment have also been improved. CO2 emissions should be slightly lower, too. So overall, Alfa has made an already good car even better, albeit at a price.

New Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2020 review

Verdict
4.5/5

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio has received a mild revamp visually and is basically the same car dynamically as before. But beneath the skin it now contains a lot more technology. It’s also better styled and feels like a much higher-quality product inside, while its connectivity and overall specification have also improved. A good SUV made even better.

Minor improvements but sorely needed. Hopefully next year a bigger restyling will be introduced.

The year after next. Switch from Giorgio to Giorgio Global/hybrid. So that they can share it with upcoming Maserati D SUV.

Yeah, lets not do a re-do of the Caliber and Journey interior refreshes, and leave the exterior the same.

(for the record, I do like the changes)

They've improved almost all what was considered as drawback.

Not much to improve for facelift/MCA except new powertrains.

But still missing are virtual cockpit, HUD and Full LED headlights. For North American market it could be ventilated seats.

A lot of late calls for exterior colors on MY2020. Blu Andodizzato was expected but Rosso Villa d'Este 6C wasn't.

Interesting to see unexpected colors. I was spot on about North American market colors. Maybe some of them are one off specials or at least only for Europe.

Me too! Seems to be Europe only.

Some spokesman confirmed at the press event that they wait with LED headlights until after the Tonale launch, because it will introduce the new Alfa face.

First time I hear it. The most logical is to wait till refresh which just coincidentally is around the same time as Tonale's Job 1.

Italians do not care so much about family feeling. Even Ralph Gilles said that for Italians every model is unique with its own story.

I don't know if they will stick with original plan. But that plan was in the place when Alfa was supposed to launch twins in C, D and E segemnts.
The plan was for every twin to have their own design language.
For example Giulia with Stelvio and Tonale with Giulietta.
I'm talking about exterior design.

A lot of new colors for European Giulia and Stelvio, less for North America.

Level 2 autonomy is probably not the limit of this system. Unlike the USA, autonomous vehicles are regulated in Europe, as in every other country that has adopted the UNECE vehicle standards, so what you'll see here is what is permitted on the public roadway. Some of the manoeuvers that Tesla allows in its American-market cars would be lethal in European driving conditions*, where traffic speeds are much faster, and everyone isn't using cruise-control.

The current regulations allow for automated overtake and highway merge/departure, and that should be possible with the hardware sensors that are already installed to implement the lane-keeping, cross-path detection, blind-spot monitor and sign recognition systems.

As a brand, though, Alfa can't go all-in on autonomous driving as a feature: it's fine to take the monotony out of long-distance motorway drives, but Alfa's superior handling and driver engagement is at odds with the idea of "a car that drives itself".

__
* Although I have to note here that they're possibly lethal in American conditions too. My employer just leased a Tesla Model X to use as a promotional vehicle. On its very first "Autopilot" trip, down I-35 in Austin, TX, the vehicle nearly killed three of my colleagues by refusing to yield in a lane merge, despite it being slightly behind the vehicle to its left.

@KrisW

They are using Bosch systems to reach Level 2. IMO they should offer at least Level 2+ with MCA. AFAIK Level 2+ would be provided by Aptiv.

In current state for MCA is responsible Turin R&D center and not Modena. Of course all is subject to change after the merger. IMO, Alfa will could once again switch over to Modena. At least for RWD/Giorgio based products.
