Well it’s happened again. Another theft from the car holding lot at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant (JNAP) in Detroit, Michigan. The Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Jefferson North Assembly Plant is the production home of the popular Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango sport-utilities. It is also a holding lot for many cars, such as the popular Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler 300 (vehicles assembled in Canada and come across the border only a few miles away at Detroit/Windsor border and wait to be shipped to dealers).

In August, we told you about six Dodge Durango SRT models that were stolen from the lot at JNAP days after another theft that included four Dodge Charger models.

People wonder why the insurance rates are so high in Detroit.

Depends... some sell on Craigslist, to wholesalers, to parts companies, overseas... the list goes on and on. Its been a big black market business with chop shops in Detroit for decades. However, now you don't need a shop with all the vacant property. Just take it down to the end of an empty street and an hour later you have a shell.

I remember being 5 years old in 1990, my dad worked downtown at an electric motor company. He took me with him and there was a Chevrolet van on the side of I-94 near downtown and a bunch of guys jumped out the van and were stealing wheels off of a broke down car while we were sitting there in rush hour traffic.

The place he worked at had bought a brand new 1990 Chevrolet S-10 as a delivery truck. Had it three days before the wheels were stolen off of that and the interior was gutted.

My neighbor was a manager for Barton Mallow and was in charge of laying the concrete foundation for Comerica Park where the Tigers now play. He has a brand new 1998 Ford F-150 Super Crew Lariat 4x4 in black (super nice truck at the time) he had it for a week. Had a chrome diamond plate toolbox in the back. Was on the ballpark site while they were pouring the pit, grabbed his coffee and went to a high point to over look the construction about 100 feet from his truck. He was talking to one of his workers for about two minutes after he walked away from his truck (which was locked) and noticed it was gone. The crew spent an hour looking for it, and found it about two miles on a side street, missing the wheels, airbags, stereo, runningboards, toolbox, about $2k in tools, the catalytic converters were gone, the tailgate, and CB radio he had in it. Glass wasn't broken or anything and when he told the Detroit Police he had locked it, they laughed. They said it doesn't matter if you lock those 1997-1999 Ford F-150s, the thieves figured if you took a tennis ball, cut a slot in the ball, put the ball with the opening against the lock and hit the ball just right, it would push air in the door lock unlocking the door. Then it was a cool 20 seconds for an expert to hot wire it and be gone.
