As the semiconductor shortage continues to hit the automotive industry hard, Stellantis has idled several more North American plants. Demand for semiconductor chips continues to rise and it seems that the shortages could continue to affect the automotive industry to 2023, according to the latest reports.

With semiconductors becoming the backbone of the industry, controlling electronic features like driver-assist technologies, hybrid-electric systems, and even infotainment connectivity, it’s getting hard to manufacturer the vehicles that the buying public wants.

The FIM-CISL, an Italian trade union, reported Monday that Stellantis production at some Italian facilities was down about 14% year over year. What's more, the union said they expect 200,000 units of lost production because of the semiconductor shortage that has constrained auto production for more than a year.
