So what do you guys think of this update? How does it square up against the Ram 1500?

I still don’t like the exterior design. The interior is nice especially the floor shifter. ZR2 is a lost cause. The way the made it, it is just a glorified Trail Boss. They should have used LT4 engine.

Interior is certainly nice - though i think Ram does a better job overall with a couple things and how they integrate wood for example.

ZR2 - i really like the non-baja/wide body with good shocks and lockers. Detachable bumper ends I could take or leave, though it is one of the more common areas to damage day to day.

Really hope this makes Ram take the Rebel one step farther with a 6.4 option. There is plenty of space between Rebel and TRX.

Quite a lot of torque from that 4 cylinder and big tow rating jump on the 3.0.

Can a landscape screen that wide have a useful far side for the driver? Rams portrait with dual function has some advantages in that regard, though less so for some camera views. On some of the marketing materials the far 1/3rd of the gm screen was taken up by on clock....seems like a waste for certain applications. I'd like to see ram have a few more hard buttons or toggles with the 12" set up.

Not a fan of the GM interior stylist.
Yeah, it's better than it was before, which was a low bar to get over.

The exterior is still not my style.

The new shifter looks functionally similar to the problematic shifters in the Grand Cherokee/300/Charger/etc

My Stelvio has the same Style shifter... it is very least intuitive, of the solution I have used. Wheel might be the best.

I think for most of the 2022 model year people will be buying what's available. Our fleet just took in some 2021 Nissan Titans.

Working for a fleet gives me the opportunity to drive them all. So they made the interior of the Chevy truck prettier, but are the seats still back breakers? The high line Ford trims have a cartoonish instrument panel and it looks like Chevy is following suit.

How do the Titan and Tacoma compare with the american models?

Titan looks dated outside and inside.
The upcoming Tundra is hideous outside.

The Titan is slightly smaller than the American branded full-size trucks. Ours are all refrigerator white with the SV trim. These are in our fleet mostly for business rents. During the pandemic, our business rental died off completely and is now only slowly restart. (Keep in mind this is the airport location. Our traditional business customer renting a pickup is usually someone with a specialized skill set flown in by their employer for a specific task.) We sold off most of our fleet in March of 2020. Later that year we were getting a lot of one way pickup and large SUV rentals from people escaping the People's Republic of California. Vehicles are also renting out to those who suddenly finding themselves on the no fly list. The pickup trucks we have accumulated very high miles because of such use.

Back to your question. The Titan SV has a short box, crew cab. ours have chrome bumpers and trim with cloth seats, so there not the very basic trim. I'm a stereo-typical American with a fat butt and the drivers seat feels on the tight side. The Nissan Titans are new with less than 1,000 miles when I drove them. It is hard to tell the performance and braking during this time. I believe all Titans have V8s. The Titan seems to lack the herk- jerky moves of the Ford ecoBoost trucks.

I haven't been behind the wheel of a Toyota Tundra newer than a 2020. When I first drove one it instantly reminded me of the 1974 Dodge D-100 pickup I owned. My Dodge was a cheap tin box and I'm quite sure that's what Toyota bench marked for that generation of the Tundra. Maybe the higher line Tundra trims have more sound insulation, so there isn't the the bass drum sound when my foot bumps against the transmission tunnel. There is no sign of the new generation Tundra.

The Chevy work trucks scream cheap. The seats have little seat adjustment and I can't find a comfortable position. The higher line trims on the Chevy pickups are much better. Again I haven't driven the new generation of Silverado.

The low line Ford F-150s are pleasant to drive. The high line F-150s can be optioned up with enough toys to be distracting. I don't like the cartoonish gauge panel, but that's my taste.

We haven't had any new DT Ram 1500s come in since January 2020. Maybe other locations have, but not ours. The DT Rams we have in stock have high miles for a rental car, which is over 50,000 miles. We have a number of DS Ram Classics in stock. We occasionally get a few new ones in stock. The DS Rams are in various trims. All of them have cloth seats, which means the Tradesman trim work trucks have been option up a little. They are split between Hemis and V6s. The DS Ram Rams still feel up to date until I drive a DT.

Interesting. I was curious to know the thoughts on the asian alternatives.
From what I understand, your fleet mostly rents to professionals so you have more of the lower trim models?
Are you guys considering getting Rivian pick-ups or are they outside the price range of the pick-ups you guys usually get?
I would like to see your impressions of it in terms of functionality after trying it out. :)

Pre-pandemic our low-line to high-line trim mix for pickup trucks was about even. During the big sell off last year we lost many of the high-line trimmed vehicles. Now that business is returning there is a rental vehicle shortage. New vehicles are hard to get because of the chip shortage. Toyota and Nissan stocked up on chips so we have added many Toyota and Nissan vehicles recently. Nissans are what usually fills the rental fleets., but the proportion of Toyota sedans has increased because they are available and Toyota is willing to sell. Lower trim line trucks have less toys, which naturally use less chips increasing availability. Nissan can sell us more pickups and Armada SUVs because with their Leaf sales they don't run into the CAFE mix issues. Another thing about the Nissan Titan is that is an older design. The newer the design the more microchips are needed for added technology. The new Frontier hasn't been seen around here. We do get Tacoma pickups and they are a customer favorite, The Tacoma trim levels are different in that many of the higher trims don't add a lot of tech.

Now that the rental fleets frequently run out of cars, the low-line pickup trucks are frequently rented out to families.

Keep in mind our fleet has a separate commercial division. It is in a suburb not far away from the airport. They rent all manner of trucks and have Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups available. Customers with a commercial account may even rent diesel powered pickups.

We have fully loaded F-150 pickups in top-line trims which retail for $75K. Our commercial truck outlet has F-350 crew cab diesel dually pickups available and those have retail sticker prices close to six figures. They do have Ram with Cummins diesels available, but they tend to be in tradesman trim.

Another division of the corporate entity I work for offers leased vehicles. I have seen Teslas returned from a lease that ended, so I imagine a Rivian might show up for a lease situation. The only BEV at our airport location are a couple of Volvos. They take days to charge plugged into a standard wall outlet. We take returned vehicles and have them serviced, cleaned, and refueled in less than ten minutes. Even if we had high speed charging, it would not fit the rental car business model. I don't know how they handle the BEVs at the California locations.

I fully expect our commercial truck location will have battery electric Ford Transit vans when they become available, because it is a slightly different turn around procedure. The reservation rules are stricter as well. There is more room there, so high speed charging is more practical, but the chargers are very expensive to purchase. They will most likely see the electric F-150 as well, but the van will be available first according to Ford.
