Included is LT5 supercharged 6.2-liter V8 from the new Chevy Corvette ZR1

SEMA is drawing near, so expect a whole slew of news in the next few weeks on custom cars, aftermarket parts and more. GM always has a big display on hand, with tons of parts and accessories from its Chevrolet Performance division. Some of the biggest news this year is the addition of a few new crate engines, bringing GM's crate-engine total to nearly 50. In order to showcase these new offerings, Chevy's bringing a few custom cars and trucks packed with modern hardware.

The most powerful of the bunch is a 1973 Chevy Chevelle Laguna packed with the LT5 supercharged 6.2-liter V8 from the new Chevy CorvetteZR1. Like in the 'Vette, the engine makes 755 horsepower and 715 pound-feet of torque. It packs a larger displacement supercharger relative to the LT4 found in the Corvette Z06, Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CTS-V. The Chevelle itself sports a carbon-fiber hood, new front and rear spoilers, a modified suspension and NASCAR-style 18-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear tires.

The other two vehicles GM is bringing are both trucks. The first is a 1967 Chevy C10 with a ZZ6 EFI crate engine. It's basically a classic 350 Chevy small block fitted with a modern electronic fuel-injection system. The engine comes in various tunes making up to 420 horsepower. The C10 itself packs lowered suspension, 20-inch wheels, a revised tailgate and rear bumper and a custom interior. Chevy hasn't released any photos, so we'll have to wait a few weeks to see the full truck.

The final vehicle on display will be a 1978 Chevy K10 Silverado with a L96 crate engine. The 6-liter V8 is rated at 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Chevy says the main benefit of the new electronically-controlled fuel-injected V8 is more power and less weight than classic Chevy big blocks. The engine is paired with a four-speed automatic. The K10 was reworked with a frame-off restoration at GM's Milford Proving Grounds in Michigan.

2019 Chevy Camaro shows off new color, new SS nose at SEMA
The new fascia looks so much better

Chevrolet announced that it will be showing off a mildly customized 2019 Chevy Camaro at this year's SEMA Show. And it's rather interesting for a couple of reasons. First of all is the color, which is aptly named "Shock." It's a tennis ball yellow color that's actually very similar to what was used on the 2017 Chevy Camaro Turbo AutoX concept from a couple of years ago. It will be available early next year on the 2019 Camaro.

The other interesting part of this Camaro is that it could be considered an admission from Chevy that they didn't quite nail the looks of the 2019 Camaro SS. You see, this glowing show car is an SS, but the front fascia is very clearly different from the production model. The production SS has a giant black center that blends in with the rest of the grilles, and features the bowtie badge square in the middle. The Autoblog staff is divided on the new face – some say it looks like a 2018 Camaro hit a large animal and punched a giant hole through the middle.

But this show car moves the badge to the upper grille, like on the 2018 model, and paints the center bar the same color as the rest of the body. The result is something that looks like the much more conservative four-cylinder and V6 Camaros, and to the 2019's detractors it's a major improvement for the SS. It blends with the rest of the generally unchanged body, and looks sleeker than the full, flat face of the 2019 SS model.

The question is, will Chevy make this less controversial fascia available to the public? The company says it's just a concept design, but it's possible Chevy will be gauging the public's reaction to decide whether to introduce it. If any stylists, executives or other GM employees are reading (and care about our opinion), we'll cast our vote in favor of the show car's face.

After seeing the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro SS a hundred or so times... the pre-production grille was not cutting it. Thank God they fixed it. Still has the Pringles guy look...

According to GM Media...

"The Camaro SS Shock show vehicle also features concept front-end styling that includes a relocated bowtie emblem and concept hood/fender graphics."

That Camaro actually looks great. I even like the color. I can see them making a body-color front fascia standard and leaving the black as an option, similar to what Dodge did for the 2015 Charger.
