From the Rumor Mill: Ford Mustang Sedan To Feature Turbo V8 Engine

Fast-forward to 2018, and Ford appears to be interested in getting that concept into production. Being based on the S650 generation of the Mustang, the CD6 vehicle architecture would be the most likely scenario. But on the other hand, this information hasn’t been confirmed by the Blue Oval.

Mustang6G reports: “Dealers were told that the four-door Mustang will come with a turbo V8,” aiming to steal sales from “the Porsche Panamera and Audi A7.” The question is, does the Ford Motor Company need such a model in its lineup in this age of utility vehicle-driven sales?

Whatever the answer, let’s rejoice the V8 isn’t going anywhere. Being responsible for the Flathead V8, Ford can’t afford to drop eight-cylinder options because that would alienate a lot of people from the brand, including the founder of the Dearborn-based automaker.

In order to keep the V8 alive and kicking through the 2020s, Ford confirmed that the Mustang would go hybrid in 2020. There’s even a teaser of the long-rumored model, showcasing the sort of front fascia that you’d expect from something out of Tron: Legacy.

As for turbocharging instead of supercharging, strapping a spool to each bank of cylinders is the more fuel-efficient solution. A hot-vee design would be most competent in terms of packaging, and Mercedes-AMG knows it all too well from the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that serves as the workhorse of the high-performance brand.

Instead of an ending note, does the four-door Mustang even make sense considering that Chevrolet dropped the SS over poor sales? The family-sized Corvette from Australia might be a favorite among car enthusiasts, but ultimately, General Motors killed it off along with the previous generation of the Holden Commodore.

The Chrysler 300 will be discontinued too, and as far as the Fusion is concerned, the Sport is too little too late for a segment that keeps on dwindling with each passing year. Provided that Ford gets it all areas of interest, the Mustang-inspired electric SUV confirmed for 2020 makes a lot more sense than the four-door Mustang.

It’s Fords answer to the Charger, and only a decade late.

Thinking it over, it looks like they’re trying to establish a Mustang sub-brand. This would be a mistake IMHO, as the ‘stang’s life blood is as the quinticential ponycar. The 4 door performance car should be the Thunderbird, as the definition of luxury has changed since the ‘60s. The “mustang suv” needs to be branded separately as well—no matter how “performance”it is, it will only end up tarnishing the mystique of the one true Mustang.

Ford had a 2011 concept car, that was a foreshadow of the 2015 Ford Mustang styling that was a sedan. It was called the Ford EVOS Concept...

Detailed: Evos Concept foretells Ford's future

In the past few years, Ford hasn't done too many high-style concepts. Most of its design studies have generally been previews of a future production model, with a few recent and distant exceptions. But the Ford Evos Concept stands apart.

Unveiled last evening and previewed here in Berlin, Germany ahead of its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Evos is the next step in the One Ford strategy, creating a new global styling language to go along with its new global architectures. Whereas the outgoing Kinetic design was a stylistic turning point for Ford, debuting in Europe and then slowly making its way to the States in the form of the Fiesta and Focus, the Evos is a clear picture of the future face of a global Ford. And while we won't see a production model based on this 2+2, Ford's head of design, J Mays, says we'll be seeing the first roadgoing example of this new styling not in four years, but in a scant four months.

Four months? That's Detroit. And if recent rumblings are to be believed, what you're looking at is an stylized interpretation of the next Fusion. But in reality, the Evos isn't that overly styled. It's the exact opposite – at least according to Mays.

"We wanted to simplify the overall [Kinetic] design," Mays told the assembled media masses. That language, originally shown on the Iosis concept back in 2005 and eventually influencing the entire European Ford line-up, needed to evolve, hence "Evos."

"It's paired down, defined, tailored," Mays asserts, citing the overall sense of "visual premiumness" from the new trapezoidal grille that's both more attractive and aerodynamic to the clean cutlines of the sides and admittedly Aston-like haunches. But more than any other element of the Evos, it's the slim head- and tail lamps that turn the volume down.

Unless they plan on selling it as a cop car like the Charger, I don't see a good business case for the car. Ford is not a all-out performance brand like Dodge. Also, they have dropped their entire car lineup. Including the Fusion which outsells the Charger in a declining market. If Ford does this, its a bad business move and their stock holders will be pissed off.

Perhaps they got tired of losing sales to the slightly larger, more accommodating Challenger?
