A couple of weeks ago, we showed you spy shots of a Chinese-market 2021 Jeep Grand Commander PHEV mule testing out on the streets of Metro Detroit. Our friends at Real Fast Fotography have done it again. Catching a couple of 2021 Jeep Grand Commander PHEV mules testing around the FCA Auburn Hills campus.

While the mule we seen a couple of weeks ago was a roughly cut up altered Jeep Cherokee with a long wheelbase. This is the first time we are seeing the PHEV in its final production form out in the wild.

@redriderbob

The one without a camouflage is also a PHEV Grand Commander?

From it's debut in China... no information was given but was just used as a prop for the China debut... FYI Commander is the 5-seater version of K8 and Grand Commander is 7-seater version.

Yes. Note the fuel door on the driver side. On PHEV models it has filler doors on both sides where the standard model has it just like Cherokee (KL) on the passenger side only.

OK. I'm asking because it has VP mark on a window. In that case it'as less than 6 months from production. How much less? I don't know. But that's in line with Chinese media. They're saying that PHEV sales will start late this year or early next year.

This slide from a new plan is a very important to understand all craze with PHEV and BEV Jeeps for Chinese market:

So they must have pushed this vehicle forward in the pipeline then. Since it was originally planned for a late 2020 year debut as a 2021 model year vehicle.

It's all related to Chinese regulations.

From Reuters article:
Car makers will need to amass credits for so-called new-energy vehicles (NEVs) equivalent to 10 percent of annual sales by 2019, China’s industry ministry said in a statement on Thursday. That level would rise to 12 percent for 2020.

So this is connected to regulations. It says 10%. That's true in case if 10% is all BEV. PHEV or fuel cell equivalent is 25%.

Carmakers with lower volume could have some exceptions.

This is Jeep's plan for China:

Greencarreports said that according to new plan Jeep wants to launch Granc Commander BEV in China by 2021. So PHEV certainly must come sooner that that.
