In 1987, Shelby and his team released a performance version of the Dodge Lancer dubbed the Shelby Lancer. Painted in a striking Graphic Red exterior color, the Shelby Lancer was intended to be an American counterpart to European performance sedans like the BMW 3-Series.

I owned two Shelby Lancers a number of years ago. One was an automatic and the other a 5 speed. The 5 speed was a Pilot car, number 800. As described in the article above they were well equipped with a top of the line Pioneer Stereo system, Power Windows, Power Door Locks, etc. The 5 speed was more responsive and fun to drive. Both cars handled very well. The Shelby Lancers were built to compete with a BMW. Although they were lacking in the sophistication of a BMW their price was quite a bit lower than a BMW.
