Stellantis and LG Energy form Joint-Venture for North American battery production

  • Stellantis N.V. (NYSE / MTA / Euronext Paris: STLA) and LG Energy Solution today announced that their companies have entered into a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture to produce battery cells and modules for North America.

    The parties intend that the joint venture will establish a new battery manufacturing facility that will help power Stellantis’ goal of realizing more than 40% of its sales in the U.S. comprised of electrified vehicles by 2030. Targeted to start by the first quarter of 2024, the plant aims to have an annual production capacity of 40 gigawatt hours.

    The batteries produced at the new facility will be supplied to Stellantis assembly plants throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico for installation in next-generation electric vehicles ranging from plug-in hybrids to full battery electric vehicles that will be sold under the Stellantis family of brands.

    “Today’s announcement is further proof that we are deploying our aggressive electrification road map and are following through on the commitments we made during our EV Day event in July,” said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis. “With this, we have now determined the next ‘gigafactory’ coming to the Stellantis portfolio to help us achieve a total minimum of 260 gigawatt hours of capacity by 2030. I want to warmly thank each person involved in this strategic project. Together, we will lead the industry with benchmark efficiencies and deliver electrified vehicles that ignite passion.”

    The partnership between the two companies in electrified vehicles dates back to 2014 when LG Energy Solution (then LG Chem) was selected by Stellantis (then Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) to supply the lithium-ion battery pack system and controls for the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, the industry’s first electrified minivan. With this announcement, the two companies look to solidify their partnership even further and continue leveraging each other’s strengths.

    Stellantis plans to invest more than €30 billion through 2025 in electrification and software development, while targeting to continue to be 30 percent more efficient than the industry with respect to total Capex and R&D spend versus revenues.

They already have. Work started with the Ram PHEV pickup trucks they built last decade. This was done in cooperation with the US Dept of Energy. Charging networks such as Electrify America, EVgo and ChargePoint use some of the vehicle to network technology pioneered during the Ram PHEV program. Different companies catalog DC chargers. All Stellantis plugin vehicles use the standard SAE plugs globally. (China may be different.) Tesla vehicles use the same SAE plugs in Europe everyone else uses. Only in the US (maybe Canada) does the Tesla network uses their unique plug.

So our Appliances will be LG instead of Samsung. Did anyone see one of the Telsa founders saying people mandating and rushing to EVs have not done that math on supply.

There needs to be consolidation of all these charge stations, having 15 different chargers depending on who made the car is ridiculous. Imagine needing gas but the station you sputtered into doesn't fill Dodge's.

Reuters reports that Stellantis will also sign a similar agreement with Samsung. Which makes sense, you don't want to exclusively depend on one supplier otherwise they have you by the balls.

There needs to be consolidation of all these charge stations, having 15 different chargers depending on who made the car is ridiculous. Imagine needing gas but the station you sputtered into doesn't fill Dodge's.

That's a problem in the US. You guys seem to have difficulties without strong regulators to impose common standards to the industry. In Europe all chargers need to accept the CCS standard.

The idea is to increase and spread the charging station and not model-specific.
It would also act as a way of increasing awareness.

I can't remember what thread I posted the charging station standards here on Mopar Insiders. The SAE spent a lot of time and resources figuring this stuff out. The only competing charging standards and plugs are Tesla, ChAdeMO, and whatever setup China uses. GM's paddle connector for the EV1 is long dead. CHAdeMO fom Japan is fading away, but already there are adapters available to charge vehicles that use those plugs.

What doesn't help the EV cause is that in our current political environment politics usurps engineering. The SAE determined a way forward, but it has been usurped by politics. Certain charging networks are favored over others and the favorites receive corporate welfare. In my area of the midwest the charging infrastructure is a joke, but the state politicians lie about it and say everything is up to date. I have read the horror stories of those who try to travel cross country with a non-Tesla EV.

The industry/consumers will likely drive the consolidation on its own in quick order if it does ramp up as fast as it looks like it may. There are various examples of this

Sony/JVC Beta/VHS even though BetaMax was the far superior technology
Sony/XXX mini-disk versus SD card and compaqflash , even though mini-disk was the superior technology
USB/Firewire1394 even though FW was faster and supported chaining long before USB

Examples contrary where regulation had to step in because the consolidation was not happening and instead was bifurcation

X90/K56flex modem 56k communication protocols
Early US monies (fed move to gold/silver base standard and eventual us currency)

Global automaker Stellantis NV (STLA.MI) has agreed a partnership with Italian e-mobility startup TheF Charging to create a European public charging network accessible to all electric vehicles, the two companies said on Tuesday.The network, which will reserve exclusive conditions for Stellantis customers, is expected to be operational in 2021, with the first charging stations to be built in Italy.

If you want to see an example of positive change caused by the EU forcing the adoption of microUSB as an universal standard for cell phone chargers. And now they're pushing for USB-C.
Complain about regulators when you have these corporations even limiting your right to repair the equipment you bought.

If you want American NOT to do something. Try forcing it on them. There are cultural differences that seem to be ignored. Let the market decide not some dumb as Government worker.

You know that right to repair laws are being passed because since apparently americans are so dumb ass that they won't stop shooting themselves in the foot by buying electronics, tractors and even cars that are hostile against the OWNER to repair what he/she bought. But hey, "freedom". You are so easy to manipulate.

Yeah we will keep that whole freedom thing over being under foot of the ruling class and suffer all the mass murder.

Its not perfect. Having to deal with non-repairable device is a pretty good trade.

You all do you. But arrogance that your system of government and dictating it to others, history shows is poor at best.

Funny the guy the embracing manipulation just by the Ruling class, accuses other of manipulation.

Keep yours and we will keep ours. The best solutions should not be dictated by a mindless government worker, they usually pick wrong.
