CAUGHT: ECODIESEL 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel On The Streets:

Updated EcoDiesel Coming This Summer...

A couple of weeks ago, we showed you a video from this summer with a 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel prototype testing out in Moab, Utah. The thing that made this particular Rebel different was the fact that the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 powered was under the hood. Now our spy photographers, have caught what appears to be another Ram 1500 Rebel also powered by the EcoDiesel V6.

While Ram has been very quiet about the upcoming EcoDiesel for the 2019 Ram 1500. The competition has grown in the past two years. Ford has brought a new 3.0-liter PowerStroke V6 diesel to market in their F-150. The Powerstroke pumps out 250 horsepower and 440 lb.-ft of torque while achieving a rating of 30 MPG highway. General Motors has also announced that it is bringing a 3.0-liter Duramax I6 engine to its Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 for the 2019 model year. While official information has not been released on the Duramax specifications, leaked dealer material puts the engine at 282 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft of torque.

When the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 made it’s debut last year at the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, then CEO of Ram Trucks, Mike Manley stated that the EcoDiesel would be back in the first part of 2019, with best-in-class horsepower and best-in-class torque. While Ram has yet to give out any official numbers of the updated 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6, Manley did release numbers of the EcoDiesel 2019 Jeep Wrangler due out around the same time as the Ram. Those numbers are 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft of torque. Both numbers fall short of the 3.0-liter Duramax I6 in the General Motors offering.

The updated 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 will have several new features for the 2019 model year. Engine Stop-Start (ESS) will be standard for 2019. An updated eight-speed automatic transmission will be standard and has been designed to handle the increased torque output.

FCA US engineers adapted the engine – manufactured by FCA-owned V.M. Motori – to meet the NAFTA region’s regulatory requirements.

Starting in 2019, the EcoDiesel V-6 engine implements new turbocharger technology with a low-friction bearing designed for low end and transient performance. The upgraded EcoDiesel V-6 engine now also features low-friction pistons to improve fuel economy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide an enhanced combustion system – new injector nozzle, piston bowl, and glow plug with an integrated combustion pressure sensor to optimize combustion.

While Ram hasn’t released an official date as of yet of when production will start, we do know that the engine will be available sometime around in the summer.
