The Supercharged 2003 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 Concept

The Wagon That Revolutionized The Modern Mopar Muscle Movement...

During the mid-2000s, the Dodge Magnum garnered significant attention and Mopar captivated enthusiasts before being succeeded by the 2008 Dodge Challenger. However, before the Magnum became a reality, Dodge introduced the Magnum in concept form through the 2003 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 Concept. This marked a significant moment as it was the first instance in over three decades that the Dodge brand presented a production-ready car boasting HEMI power and rear-wheel-drive. While the Super8 HEMI Concept had tantalized fans earlier, the Magnum was more than just a conceptual dream – it was slated for actual production.

Dieter Zetsche, then President and CEO of Chrysler Group, remarked, “The Dodge Magnum SRT-8 Concept redefines American muscle, blending innovation in packaging, performance, and utility into an unparalleled form. It’s a performance sports tourer that combines HEMI-powered might with rear-wheel drive, delivering remarkable power within a versatile and flexible package.”

The Magnum SRT-8 Concept paid homage to Dodge’s storied muscle car legacy from the 1960s, featuring a potent 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine. During that period, the HEMI engine was primarily associated with the 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 and Heavy Duty trucks, not cars. However, the introduction of the Magnum wagon also brought forth the Magnum SRT-8 with its supercharged 5.7-liter HEMI V8.

This supercharged 5.7-liter HEMI V8 sported a Whipple supercharger, elevating its output to around 430 horsepower – a remarkable figure that surpassed most other vehicles of its time. The supercharger design struck a balance between substantial low-end drivability and impressive high-end horsepower efficiency. While Dodge didn’t release official performance numbers for this concept engine setup, it hinted at what was to come a dozen years later with the introduction of the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT HELLCAT.

Many design elements from the concept found their way into the 2005 Dodge Magnum production model. Even the wheel design, which was initially 20 inches in the concept, was scaled down to 18-inch wheels for the 2005 Dodge Magnum RT production variant. Notable tweaks included adjustments to the grille design, transitioning from a rising grille integrated with the hood to a stationary grille reminiscent of Ram Trucks from that era. Additionally, the production model had distinct modifications to the headlamps and taillamps.

The Dodge Magnum SRT-8 Concept marked the public’s first glimpse into the upcoming LX platform vehicles. The Magnum eventually entered production and enjoyed a four-model year run. This included an SRT-8 iteration equipped with the 6.1-liter SRT HEMI V8 engine boasting 425 horsepower. This model debuted in the 2006 model year and continued until the Magnum’s discontinuation in 2008.
