Meet Peugeot’s 2021 Midsized Landtrek Pickup For The Middle East & Africa:

Could It Lead To A Ram 1200-Badged Replacement For The Middle East?

Peugeot recently pulled the covers off of its new 2021 Peugeot Landtrek pickup truck for the Middle-East and Africa regions. The new pickup offering showcases the other side of Stellantis’ truck portfolio, with a vehicle that has been missing in the region from the former Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) side since the discontinuation of the Mitsubishi Triton-based Ram 1200/Fiat Fullback offerings in 2019.

The Peugeot Landtrek comes available in three different configurations (Single Cab, Double Cab, and Chassis Cab). The new Landtrek offers the most interior room in its class and unique modularity which allows the Landtrek to meet both professional and family needs for its customer base. The midsized pickup has a payload that can exceed 2,000 lbs depending on its configuration, as well as a towing capability of up to 7,000 lbs. That more than double the towing capability of the 2021 Ford Ranger here in the United States.

Under the hood, the Landtrek offers two powertrain options. The first is a 1.9-liter turbodiesel making 150 horsepower and 350Nm (258 ft.-lb.) of torque. The diesel is mated to a 6-speed Getrag manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission with chain distribution to optimize reliability and maintenance costs. The second powertrain is a 2.4-liter turbocharged gasoline four-cylinder delivering 210 horsepower and 320 Nm (236 ft.-lb.) of torque. The gasoline option comes with a standard 6-speed Getrag manual transmission or an optional 6-speed Punch automatic transmission featuring Manual, Sport, and Eco modes.

Of course, customers can choose their Landtrek with either two-wheel-drive (4×2) or an optional four-wheel-drive (4×4) system. For those who choose a 4×4 configuration, the rear differential is fitted with an eLocker (electronic rear differential lock) with automatic disengagement and provides additional traction when a wheel slips.

For those who plan on taking the Landtrek off-road, the midsize pickup lays down some impressive numbers for clearance.

  • Water Fording – 600 mm (23.6 inches).
  • Angle of Approach – 29 ° or 30 ° (depending on the version).
  • Angle of Departure – 27 ° or 26 ° (depending on the version).
  • Central Angle – 25 °
  • Ground Clearance – 214 mm (8.4 inches) on models equipped with 16-inch wheels, 235 mm (9.25 inches) on models equipped with 17-inch or 18-inch wheels.

The Landtrek features a number of safety features including…

  • Hill Descent Control – which allows the vehicle to be a very low speed and allows the driver to concentrate solely on steering, providing control, and safety in situations known to be stressful.
  • Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) – for enhanced traction on both 4×2 and 4×4 models.
  • Trailer Sway Control – which is an assistance system when towing that works with the vehicle’s electronic stability program (ESP) and acts automatically as soon as trailer sway appears.

When it comes to Landtrek’s new design, Peugeot worked in close collaboration with many international reference suppliers from Europe, Japan, and the United States. More than 2,000,000 kilometers (or about 1,240,000 miles) of testing was done during the vehicle’s development on all types of terrain and driving conditions, focusing particularly on harsh African roads.

The exterior design emphasizes an assertive personality with a bold vertical grille with the Peugeot “Lion” located in the center, rugged body lines, and vertical LED light signatures depending on the model.

Inside is where it gets interesting. Taking design elements from the brand’s flagship Peugeot 508 sedan, the Landtrek offers a bold 10-inch high-definition touchscreen infotainment system at the top of the dashboard. The system features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 360-degree surround-view camera system can be displayed on the infotainment screen. The interior incorporates many of the features found on other vehicles in the Peugeot lineup, like toggle switches to access various functions.

On Double Cab models, the rear bench seat is unique to the segment with a 60/40 or 100% folding configuration. When folded down the rear seat can support a load of 220 lbs. In addition, there are two ISOFIX fasteners that ensure safety when securing child seats. Customers can choose between two front-row seating configurations. One features two bucket seats with a center console or a three-seater Multiflex bench seat. The Multiflex offers a foldable armrest/work table allowing for the ability to load bulky objects up to 165 lbs.

Production of the new 2021 Peugeot Landtrek will begin in April at the joint ventured Tunisia Assembly Plant with partner Stafim. The vehicles will be primarily intended for the local market. Peugeot will also have more than 40 dedicated accessories available at the launch of the new Landtrek for customers to choose from. Those items include running boards, thermoformed body protection, chrome roll bar, alarm system, and protective all-weather interior mats.

The Landtrek could prove to be a good basis for a Ram-branded midsized offering for the Middle-East and Asia regions. A true replacement for the Ram Commercial brand’s Ram 1200 offering that expanded the lineup in those global markets before.

One can only speculate as to how the merger will impact our domestic product, but thanks to our detectives at Insiders, we can never know too much about things Peugeot and it’s associated brands. At this point I am resting much of my hopes for the Chrysler brand on spinning off, rebranding and restyling some of these products as well as refreshing the current 300 and creating an SUV off the Pacifica. Those familiar with a highly imaginative plan I’ve championed with others, to move the Cherokee to a shortened Grand Cherokee platform, thus freeing up the current Cherokee facility to build the transplanted Peugeots as Chrysler’s there, will be keenly interested. Yes there is a way foreward for Chrysler and much of it could be found at Peugeot. Keep us informed Mopar Insider detectives, there is so much in our partners portfolio to stir our imaginations and hopes.

Yep , no chance of coming to North America, safety standards, ties to Nissan plus the U.S. Chicken tax.

I think it is a positive indicator that Stellantis is investing in local manufacturing. A truck like this wouldn't do well here, hopefully there will be a similar sized Ram product for our side of the ocean.

I would not discribe this truck as very bad, but I agree it is unsuitable for our domestic market. What is significant is the potential of something in their offerings, even some technology, that can be used in our domestic brand products. We need to keep informed and open minded to that prospect. Desperate Chrysler brand loyalists like myself are open to anything that can rescue our beloved brand. It’s called a cry for help.
