Dodge's Mid-1970's Economy Car Could Be Yours...

Classic Mopar car enthusiasts and collectors, a unique piece of 1970s history is now available on BringATrailer.com: a 1973 Dodge Colt Hardtop. Background: The Shift from Muscle to Economy –

In the early 1970s, the American automotive landscape was dramatically reshaped by a series of significant events. Stricter emissions regulations, introduced to combat pollution, required automakers to reduce harmful tailpipe emissions. This led to the development and implementation of emission control devices, such as catalytic converters and air pumps, which impacted the performance of high-powered muscle cars.

Simultaneously, the oil crisis of the early 1970s, triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, resulted in skyrocketing fuel prices and widespread shortages. Consumers began favoring smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles over the gas-guzzling muscle cars that had dominated the roads. Additionally, rising insurance premiums for high-performance vehicles made muscle cars less attractive, especially to younger drivers.

These factors combined to mark the end of the classic muscle car era. In response, Dodge and other automakers began offering more economical and practical models. Enter the Dodge Colt, a compact car designed to meet the new consumer demand for efficiency and affordability.

The 1973 Dodge Colt Hardtop: Features and Condition –

This 1973 Dodge Colt Hardtop, finished in a striking red with a contrasting white vinyl roof, embodies the design ethos of its time. Its pillar-less profile, “1600” badging on the front fenders, and chrome bumpers evoke a sense of classic style. The paint has been refinished under previous ownership, ensuring it looks as good today as it did when it first rolled off the assembly line.

Equipped with Panasport 14-inch wheels and 185/60 BFGoodrich Touring T/A TR4 tires, this Colt offers a balanced blend of vintage aesthetics and practical performance. The factory hubcaps are also included in the sale for those who prefer a more original look.

Inside, the Colt features front bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in white vinyl, complemented by a color-coordinated headliner and door panels. The black dashboard and carpeting provide a tasteful contrast. Amenities include an AM radio, a cigar lighter, and a glove compartment, all refurbished under previous ownership to maintain their period-correct appearance.

The dashboard houses a two-spoke steering wheel on a tilt column, framing a horizontal 120-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 29k miles, though the true mileage is unknown.

Under the hood, the Colt is powered by a 1.6-liter Mitsubishi inline-four engine, producing 85 horsepower and 90 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission, sending power to the rear wheels. This combination offers a driving experience that is both engaging and efficient, reflecting the practical priorities of its era.
