HEMI Time Capsule: 1969 Plymouth Road Runner Hits BaT

One-Of-One Spec Muscle Icon Heads To Auction

Pure, unfiltered muscle — that’s exactly what this freshly refurbished 1969 Plymouth Road Runner coupe represents. And now, this rare HEMI® legend has surfaced on BringATrailer.com, where bidding wraps up Friday, December 5th at 2:28 p.m. EDT. With its factory-built 426 HEMI V8, automatic transmission, and a one-of-one documented configuration verified by Galen’s Registry, this is the kind of Mopar unicorn we rarely see offered publicly.

The Ultimate Muscle Combo –

One of only 162 HEMI Road Runner post coupes paired to a TorqueFlite automatic in 1969, this car left Don White Car Center in Baltimore dressed in Black Velvet (X9), both inside and out. Beneath the Air Grabber hood lives the star of the show — a 7.0-liter (426 cubic-inch) HEMI V8 with dual four-barrel carburetors, factory-rated at 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque. A Sure-Grip differential and the Performance Axle Package with 3.55 gears handle putting that power to pavement.

According to Galen Govier’s 2012 visual inspection, matching serial-number components are still present on the car, except for a replacement transmission case. The inspection also confirmed that, at the time, this car was the only HEMI Road Runner documented with this exact blend of options — further elevating its desirability.

Arizona Survivor Restored With Care –

After spending decades in Arizona, the car received a rotisserie restoration around 2012. During the process, the engine, red-line tires, suspension, brakes, wiring, and cooling system were overhauled. The exterior was repainted in its original black finish, and most factory-correct trim was restored. From its fender-mounted antenna to the signature Road Runner graphics, everything looks ready for Saturday-night cruising… or Concours judging.

It currently rolls on 15-inch black steel wheels with Plymouth hubcaps wrapped in Firestone Wide Oval red-line tires — a period-perfect look. Steering and braking remain unassisted drums and a manual box, just the way Plymouth built them for honest performance.

A Clean, No-Excuses Interior –

Inside, the classic black bench-seat cabin has been redone and maintains the straightforward vibe that made these cars affordable performance when new. A Chrysler Solid State AM radio, heater, dome light, and both lap and shoulder belts round out factory comforts. The three-spoke steering wheel features the iconic “Beep! Beep!” horn cap, and an auxiliary oil-pressure gauge was installed beneath the dash — practical insurance for any HEMI owner.

The odometer reads 55k miles, though only ~300 miles have been driven since the restoration was finished.

The Paper Trail Mopar Collectors Want –

Backing its authenticity, the Road Runner includes:

  • Broadcast sheet

  • Reproduction window sticker

  • Galen’s Registry inspection/24-page report

  • Vintage Arizona license plate

  • Arizona title

For the Serious Collector –

This is not just another restored B-body. It’s one of the few real HEMI post coupes ever built, wearing a sinister color combo, backed by documentation, and benefiting from a quality refurbishment. With Mopar muscle continuing to soar in the collector market, especially factory HEMI cars, it’s hard to ignore the long-term upside here.

If owning a piece of muscle car royalty is on your bucket list, this black-on-black bruiser deserves attention before the auction hammer drops.
