All-New Jeep® Compass (J4U) Begins Production In Italy
European Version Started Production On Monday...
Jeep® has officially kicked off production of the all-new 2026 Compass (J4U) at Stellantis’ Melfi Assembly Plant in Italy. This marks the beginning of a new era for Jeep’s compact SUV lineup, combining legendary off-road capability with advanced electrified powertrains, modern design, and an expanded global footprint.
A New Generation Built For Global Adventure –

For nearly two decades, the Compass name has carried Jeep’s adventurous spirit across the globe. Now in its third generation, the new J4U model pushes that legacy forward, serving as the most technologically advanced version yet.
Built on Stellantis’ new STLA Medium platform, the next-generation Compass delivers greater strength, improved efficiency, and increased cabin space. This platform has been designed from the ground up to support a variety of powertrains — from hybrid to fully electric — making it one of the most flexible architectures in Stellantis’ global portfolio.
Jeep’s engineers developed the new Compass to perform as confidently on the highway as it does off the beaten path. It blends practicality with signature Jeep toughness, providing drivers with equal measures of capability and comfort.
Electrified Powertrains With Freedom Of Choice –

True to Jeep’s “freedom of choice” philosophy, the new Compass lineup will offer a range of electrified options tailored to every driver’s needs.
The entry-level e-Hybrid model produces 145 horsepower (108 kW) and offers quiet, fuel-efficient performance ideal for daily driving. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant steps things up with 195 horsepower (145 kW) and an electric-only driving range suited for city commutes while maintaining long-distance flexibility.
The range-topping battery-electric version (BEV) is where the J4U truly makes its mark. With an output of up to 375 horsepower (280 kW) and an estimated 650 km (404 miles) of range, it becomes the most powerful and efficient Compass ever built.
Regardless of the powertrain, every Compass remains unmistakably Jeep — designed to deliver real-world performance, capability, and confidence.
Trail-Ready And Technically Advanced –

The new Compass is no soft-roader. With over 200 mm (7.9 inches) of ground clearance, 480 mm (18.9 inches) of water-fording capability, and optimized approach and departure angles, it’s more than capable of tackling rough terrain.
Jeep’s Selec-Terrain™ traction management system provides multiple modes — Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Rock (depending on trim) — adjusting power delivery and torque to handle any condition. Advanced safety systems and 360-degree sensors enhance visibility and stability, while aerodynamic refinements have reduced drag to an impressive 0.29 coefficient, improving both range and efficiency.
A Modern Design Inside And Out –

From the outside, the 2026 Compass strikes a confident stance with a more aerodynamic and sculpted design. Jeep’s signature seven-slot grille remains, but it’s now flanked by slimmer LED lighting and a more streamlined front fascia.
Inside, the cabin combines rugged durability with high-tech sophistication. A new fully digital instrument cluster, an upgraded Uconnect 5 infotainment system, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™ come standard. Premium materials and clever interior packaging offer impressive comfort, while a flat load floor and expanded storage options add everyday versatility.
Melfi: The Heart Of Jeep’s European Production –

Production of the J4U takes place at Stellantis’ Melfi Assembly Plant in southern Italy — a facility with more than 30 years of automotive heritage. Opened in 1993, Melfi has produced over 2.3 million Jeep vehicles, including the Renegade and previous-generation Compass models.
The site covers 1.9 million square meters (469 acres) and employs more than 4,600 workers, combining advanced robotics with human craftsmanship. The plant operates a highly adaptable assembly line capable of producing multiple models and powertrains simultaneously — and even converting to 100% BEV output if required.
Technology Meets Sustainability –

The Melfi plant is a showcase of Stellantis’ sustainability strategy and advanced manufacturing processes. High-precision laser alignment systems and electronic camera monitoring ensure perfect panel fitment, while the innovative 4-Wet paint process reduces environmental impact by eliminating one full coating layer.
Stellantis also plans to make Melfi a near-zero-emission facility. Renewable energy generation from solar panels, wind turbines, and biomethane will provide up to 54 megawatts of power by 2030, covering about 70% of the plant’s total energy needs.
North America’s Turn: Compass Coming Home In 2027 –

While the Italian-built Compass (J4U) is destined for over 60 countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, North American customers can look forward to a locally produced version.
Stellantis has confirmed that a North American variant of the Compass (J4U) will enter production at the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois in 2027. The U.S.-built model will be tailored specifically for the North American market, with unique trim options, equipment packages, and regional suspension tuning.
When it launches, the Belvidere-built Compass is expected to offer a hybrid powertrain and a traditional gasoline engine, providing North American buyers with flexibility in freedom of choice.
