The 1967 Dodge Charger remains a symbol of performance and style from its first generation. This custom Charger, set to be auctioned at Mecum Monterey 2024, blends classic design and modern performance upgrades that appeal to today’s car enthusiasts.
Under the Hood –
While the 1967 Charger originally introduced the new 7.2-liter (440 cubic-inch) MAGNUM V8 big-block engine, this model has been upgraded with a powerful 9.0-liter (547 cubic-inch) V8 RB-design stroker wedge engine. This engine is so new that it still has break-in oil in it. Key features include:
- Forged 4340 crankshaft and forged 4340 H-beam connecting rods with ARP 2000 rod bolts for durability.
- A hydraulic roller cam with roller rockers is used for smooth valve operation.
- Aluminum TrickFlow cylinder heads and forged Diamond 10.8:1 compression pistons for optimal performance.
- Holley Stealth fuel injection for efficient fuel delivery.
- Headers feeding dual exhaust and MSD ignition for improved engine performance.
The engine is mounted using a Magnum engine plate and K-member, and the power is transferred through an A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission with Gear Vendors overdrive. The setup is completed with a Strange Dana 60-type rear end, known for its strength and reliability.
Exterior and Interior –
The Charger’s exterior maintains its classic crisp-edge design, now refinished in silver. Highlights include a vertical rib grille and a red full-width tail lamp lens. The car’s custom touches include window tinting, shaved emblems, and custom split Hot Rods by Boyd five-spoke alloy wheels in burnished metal, wrapped in wide radial tires.
The car retains its original four bucket seats, now redone in black leather with red contrast stitching. Both the front and rear seats feature console armrests. The interior also boasts:
- Factory floor shifter for a classic feel.
- LCD Holley control panel for modern engine management.
- Customized audio system featuring a Type R subwoofer with crossovers and Focal speakers.
- Special controls and a luminescent dash cluster for a futuristic touch.
- Three-spoke steering wheel for a classic driving experience.
Performance Enhancements –
This Charger includes a professional-style roll cage for added safety and rigidity. The suspension has been modified and lowered for better handling, and rear minitubs have been added to accommodate wider tires. The car also features four-wheel disc brakes for improved stopping power.
